HTC Desire Android 2.3 update – installation guide and gallery

We’re going to do it. We’re going to sit here for the next couple of hours and update our HTC Desire with the new 2.3 update that’s just been released by HTC today. Here’s what happens. The update may contain swearing as we’re not particularly technical when it comes to things like this.

Here’s what you need:

Also, just so you know, our HTC Desire is a standard O2 branded model complete with O2 boot screen and the original, untouched, official 2.2 release. Oh yes, we like to keep things official.

To explain the process for anyone unsure what to do – this update comes as an executable PC file, which updates your HTC Desire over a USB connection. You download the stuff, open it on a PC, then run the “RUU_HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade (Gingerbread).exe” file while your Desire is connected via USB.

AGGGHHHHH. So be prepared for this to take quite a long time. You need HTC Sync installed on your PC as well as HTC’s RUU file, which is another huge 150MB+ download, plus your HTC Desire needs to have at least 30% of battery power to initiate the update process.

Meet the criteria, though, and it’s an easy task. The updater tool walks you through the steps and it’s entirely automated. Just try not to panic.

And this is it. Version 3.14.405.1 according to the updater. As mentioned by HTC, the big omission here is the Facebook app, which you now have to install yourself if you have nothing better to do with your phone’s memory.

HTC Desire Android 2.3 update begins, via DIY install

After a weird series of cancellations, retractions and odd rumours , the Android 2.3 update for the original HTC Desire has begun to appear. HTC has taken the incredibly unusual step of releasing a DIY download file, which users can flash themselves if they want to take the risk.

This is no “over the air” update. You basically have to wipe your phone and install a generic version of the Desire Android 2.3 release via your PC, with the update missing some HTC Sense features. Here’s HTC’s mammoth disclaimer:

Android 2.3 Update for HTC Desire

This update is only recommended for expert users who want to experience Android 2.3 and understand the limitations which apply to this update to the HTC Desire. Due to memory constraints several applications have been removed from this update and we are only offering the ROM upgrade utility (RUU) for you to download. Please note that flashing this ROM will erase your previous customizations, including any messages, emails, contacts, and other personal information. We suggest you take advantage of your Google account and other backup solutions available on the Android Market to ensure you do not lose your personal data. Your SD Card will not be erased or modified.

The major changes in this update include:

-All customizations, including operator applications, will be removed
-All wallpapers, except the default wallpaper, will be removed and placed online on the HTC Developer website
-Several HTC applications will be removed and placed online on the HTC Developer website
-The official Facebook application will be removed and is downloadable on the Android Market.

To download this update, please visit… http://developer.htc.com/

Note: This Rom update is for development only and not for general public use. Upgrades to non-authorized phones may result in loss of functionality. In addition certain functions may no longer be usable after re-flashing the ROM, including but not limited to MMS and SMS and HTC also disclaims liability for any unusable functions. HTC disclaims liability for the loss and/or leakage of any personal data resulting from the re-flashing of the ROM.

Updated – The following regional variants are not compatible with this upgrade: Germany (Telekom Deutschland), North America, South Korea and Japan.

Such a weird thing to do, but at least it’ll go some way toward calming the angry masses. Let us know how you get on if you install it. We’ll be setting aside an hour or two later today. It’s a 161MB download that’s on HTC’s developer site here .

BEST DEALS: Xperia Arc discounted via O2 “Flash Sale”

The stunning Xperia Arc is the star of a new weekend-long promotion from UK network O2, which is offering Sony Ericsson’s size zero Android smartphone for “free” in return for taking out a £21.50 per month contract.

It’s a half decent contract, too, coming with 100 minutes of mouth-to-ear voice chat time, 500 SMS messages and a 500MB data allowance.

A pretty good way to get a really quite superb Android phone. Check O2′s Xperia Arc special offer out here. Apparently it only runs until Monday.

Binatone ReadMe Mobile – QWERTY Android 2.1 e-reader

Binatone, which produces a couple of very cheap Android tablets already thanks to its HomeSurf range, has released another device it calls the Binatone ReadMe Mobile. The company wants us to think of it as a hybrid of tablet and e-reader, with Android 2.1 onboard to manage everything.

Oddly enough, the ReadMe Mobile is not a touch screen device – navigation is handled via the device’s control pad. And with a 7″ 800×400 traditional display, reading’s not going to be as pleasant as on a custom e-reader…

Binatone-ReadMe-Mobile

…but it’s only going to cost £129 so should find itself a few fans at that price. Very odd, like how an Android tablet would’ve looked had they existed in 1989. We don’t get sent press releases from Binatone, so this news comes via Pocket-Lint.

STATS: Nokia slumps to third in global Q2 smartphone shipments

Our new favourite data provider Strategy Analytics has released some more smartphone market share data, this time charting global sales by manufacturer in Q2 of 2011. When compared to the same period of 2010, the stats make very poor reading for Nokia, which has slumped from having 38% of the smartphone market in Q2 of 2010 to only 15% one year later.

Meanwhile…

2011 smartphone market share

…Samsung has exploded up from 5% of the total global smartphone market to take well over 17% in the space of a year, shifting just over 19 million phones. Apple’s the big target, with this data confirming reports that Samsung might be about to overtake it. Chart via MBB.

Samsung confirms white Galaxy S II – launching September 1st

The white version of the Galaxy S II has been announced by Samsung today, with the maker confirming the previous few days worth of retailer leaks. The white version is the same phone, physically and technically, and Samsung will be letting the shops entice you into contracts and hand over money prior to a September 1st launch.

And seeing as we’ve already uploaded a photo, here’s an image of the white Galaxy S II’s tech spec sheet:

And here’s the press release. Samsung says it’ll be available “across all major networks and retailers” so bang goes our theory about it being a SIM-free special.

Fenix Fire launches Roboto for Android – with Xperia PLAY controls

This is a rather nice looking thing. Roboto is a 3D action platform game designed by mobile developer Fenix Fire, that’s just launched today on iOS devices and Android. The Android version is another to feature a control scheme that’s compatible with Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY gaming phone.

It also includes OpenFeint social options and it looks like this. It’s worth watching the trailer for the sexy lady robot, at least:

Roboto is up on the Android Market here. It’s showing as compatible with the more powerful handsets we’ve used, like the Xperia Arc, HTC Sensation and Optimus 3D. No joy for Galaxy Ace owners, sadly.

Guess what the white Samsung Galaxy S II looks like?

UK online retailer MobileFun has acquired what looks like the highest-resolution photograph of the white Samsung Galaxy S II currently out there right now. Here it is, just in case you can’t imagine what a black thing looks like when they put white plastic into the machine instead:

Did you guess? The site’s selling it for £492. We assume this is going to be an exclusive for the SIM-free retailers, as none of the networks have said anything abut it thus far.

Asus: UK Eee Transformer Android 3.2 update arriving on August 2nd

So yesterday we had two possible candidate days from the US and Germany for the launch of Android 3.2 on the UK Eee Pad Transformer, now today Asus UK has given us a firm date for the specific UK launch of the latest Honeycomb upgrade – August 2nd.

This date comes via the company’s ever helpful Facebook page. We’ve taken a screencapture of the happy news. Thanks for asking, Tim:

Sooner or later we’re going to have to surrender to the massive weight of public opinion and just buy one of these tablet things. It’s where all the action is.

Best Android Games #13: Switch

Plenty of gamers on the internet have been raving about developer Playbox’s new title Switch, a modern update on the Tomytronic 3D racing genre for Android. There’s a track, but instead of fumbling about with crappy motion controls and vague steering mechanisms, all you do is tap left and right to switch between the rails and avoid obstacles.

So instead of “driving” you flip between tracks, avoiding barriers and other racers, trying to last as long as possible as it gradually speeds up. There’s even OpenFeint support for sharing your performance online.

switch android game 1

switch android game 2

It’s fantastic and works very well on touch screens because the sides you touch are usually just empty so there’s no fussing about. A great game that really suits the hardware and mobile format. Get it. It’s here and free and works on most modern-ish Android phones.
