Google UK boss blames "scarce and erratic" supplies for Nexus 4 stock nightmare

Dan Cobley, the Managing Director of Google UK & Ireland, has been pulled into the Nexus 4 stock crisis, with an email from the big boss of Google giving more detail on the dreadful problems the company has had in selling the Nexus 4 direct to buyers.

The current stock crisis is effecting all Nexus devices, with the majority of Nexus phones and tablets out of stock on Google’s Play Store. The situation regarding the Nexus 4 is worst of all, with users who ordered machines nearly a fortnight ago and promised delivery within “3-5 days” still waiting for their phones.

Here’s what Cobley has to say about the whole mess:

I know that what you are going through is unacceptable and we are all working through the nights and weekends to resolve this issue. Supplies from the manufacturer are scarce and erratic, and our communication has been flawed. I can offer an unreserved apology for our service and communication failures in this process.

For those that originally received a 3-5 days shipping estimate, your orders are now in process for fulfillment. You can expect an email notification early this week which will include tracking information. Although you will be initially charged in full, you will receive a credit for the shipping charge soon after.

For others that received pre-Christmas shipping estimates, we anticipate processing your orders for fulfillment this week.

I realise that the people who ordered the Nexus 4 so early are among our most committed and loyal users and we are doing all we can to put things right.

The email comes from a user on the XDA Forums, where an enormous thread is tracking the ongoing difficulties UK buyers have had in getting their Nexus 4 devices out of Google.

    I was put off the N4 by lack of microSd and removable battery but was going to buy one as google devices get firmware more quickly but the big shortage pushed me into buying an Note 2.

    I want one!
    I’ve lived with the lack of Micro SD support in my Galaxy Nexus, so that wouldn’t be a big deal for me.
    Also, I’ve not had a need to replace the battery at all in my current Galaxy NExus, so again, I don’t think the battery would be a big deal…

    It is a real shame that Google hasn’t learnt from their Nexus 7 release this summer. Again: stocks were erratic; communication was non-existent; many complained of missed or misaddressed deliveries; defective stock.

    My Play order was eventually shipped despite me cancelling the order two weeks prior (when I had ordered and received an N7 from Currys the next day). It took six weeks for Play to acknowledge my cancellation request and another week to issue a refund.

    Based on reports, the situation has not improved at all.

    the problem might not be so bad if they delivered items to the right place – they dispatched my phone 2 weeks ago and delivered it to a goods in dept – shame my house does have one nor anyone with the rname that signed for it!
