Huawei Ascend Y201 – Android 2.3 for £70

The mobile arm of supermarket giant Tesco has just started selling the Huawei Ascend Y201, a new super-budget Android model that’s yours in return for £70. It’s powered by a single-core 800MHz processor and will arrive running Android 2.3.5 on a 3.2″ capacitive display, with 256MB of RAM inside.

Actually, the site listing says the Ascend Y201 comes with a 3.2″ display, while the press release says 3.5″ so we’re not not entirely sure of the correct display size. Probably 3.2 given the price. Here it is:

You would be much, much, much better off spending an extra £30 on the Huawei Ascend G300 if you’re after a budget Android phone, as there’s even an official ICS update available for that one. Here’s the thing from Huawei:

Huawei’s Ascend Y 201 smartphone brings new smartphone power to the entry-level; available exclusively in white from Tesco Mobile

London, UK, September 24, 2012: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announces its Ascend Y 201 smartphone, offering remarkable functionality and value, is available now exclusively from Tesco Mobile in white, priced at £70 on pay-as-you-go and on pay-monthly tariffs starting at £10 per month.

The Huawei Ascend Y 201 is an easy-to-use introduction to the advanced world of Android smartphones, offering comprehensive functionality and great value, without skimping on style and design. It supports the kinds of services and functionality normally found in much higher-priced products, and is an ideal choice for users stepping up from feature phones or for those upgrading entry-level smartphones.

Huawei Device UK and Ireland Product and Solutions Director James Powell said: “For too long people on a budget have been required to make compromises on design, style or usability when purchasing smartphones. The Ascend Y 201 changes this. It combines great looks, slender design, and a user interface that’s simple to use for everyone who’s new to smartphones.

“Tesco Mobile is a fantastic retail destination for both first-time smartphone buyers and those upgrading old technology. Tesco Mobile’s exclusivity on the white version shows strategic expansion of both our product portfolio and our retail partnerships.”

Easy-to-use

The slim-line Huawei Ascend Y 201 represents superior smartphone technology without compromise for both first-time smartphone buyers and discerning smartphone users looking to upgrade. It is designed to make the smartphone experience simpler and more intuitive, and to ease the transition to smartphones for a part of the market curious about advanced mobile services but still limited to voice and text.

The Ascend Y 201 features Huawei’s own unique and easy-to-use interface, called HAP 5.1, which enables one-step access to various phone applications direct from the unlock screen. HAP 5.1 is intended to reduce the complexity of navigating through myriad features to access everyday call, messaging and camera functions.

As well, the Ascend Y 201 runs Android’s hugely-popular 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, which offers access to 450,000 apps via the Google Play store and kicks opens the doors to a rich world of entertainment for those upgrading with Huawei to a smartphone for the first time.

Feature packed

The Huawei Ascend Y 201 packs remarkable multimedia functionality for an entry-level smartphone. Using the phone for web-browsing, social networking and email is crisp and pleasurable. Its screen, camera and connectivity combine to make recording, viewing and sharing content a breeze.

The Ascend Y 201 includes a large 3.5-inch IPS touchscreen, with 320 x 480-pixel (HVGA) display resolution. It has a capable 3.2 megapixel camera, great for recording and sharing special moments on the go. The camera shoots video at 30 frames per second, which is equivalent of a standard camcorder. The Ascend Y 201 comes with a 4GB micro SD card in the box, further expandable to 32GB, giving room enough to carry extensive multimedia libraries as you go.

Power and speed

The Ascend Y 201′s 800MHz processor provides sufficient horsepower to support a range of mobile applications, game-play and video-rendering. Download speeds of 7.2Mbps and Wi-Fi ‘n’ keep you connected on the go, and let you share imaging and video content with friends on social networks wherever you are. The Ascend Y 201 also houses a durable 1250mAh Li-ion battery, powering up to five hours of talk time.

The Huawei Ascend Y 201 is just 9.9mm thin, and incorporates elegant contours and a distinctive metallic band across its back. It is available in ‘ceramic white’ exclusively from Tesco Mobile now, for £70 on prepay and on pay-monthly tariffs from £10 per month.

Huawei G7105

Huawei’s G7105 feature phone is also available now from Tesco Mobile, for users who prefer straightforward feature-phone functionality in a stylish and robust design.

The G 7105 is a simple and compact feature phone at just 12mm and 104 grams. It features a full 2.8-inch LCD touchscreen, a 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, a multimedia player, the Opera Mini web browser and expandable storage of up to 4GB. The G7105 is available from Tesco Mobile now in black and pink, priced at £30 on prepay.

it would be even more tempting if its £50, not necessarily for £70.

wonder if its the same phone or maybe this is the “pre” and the one in the video is a “pro” version, as it is shown with an ICS rom.
