Google’s had a thing called Sound Search available to Android owners in the US for quite some time, which lets users ID music tracks like… loads of other apps. It’s just been unlocked for use here, complete with fancy Home screen widget for easily identifying whatever RACKET you happen to be listening to at this time of night.
You then get a link to buy whatever it was via the Play Store. So you can easily purchase those songs your like off the TV adverts. That’s its little widget (top left)…
…and it can even ID songs you’re playing on the phone itself, which will be useful when streaming internet radio. And…
…it’s accessible through the Google Now interface if you have it and don’t want to have to dedicate a bit of screen space to the widget. Force the download on Google Play here if your phone doesn’t currently have it installed.

/ April 4, 2013Thanks for that, clicked on link to install it, turns out I already have it. Does it come preinstalled on nexus 7s or have I picked it up during an update sometime without realising? I’ve got no idea what I’m doing anymore.
Either way, thanks. Wife’s keen to test it on the new Skoda Octavia ad :/

/ April 11, 2013I think I heard it comes installed on the Nexus 7, but the app is disabled in all but the US versions of the tablet. There is a way to “un-freeze” it, so perhaps inadvertently that had been done on your Nexus 7.

/ April 4, 2013It appeared for some over the weekend, alongside an update to the Google search app. I’ll carry on using it to ID songs from the only three albums I listen to any more.
