The arrival of Samsung’s Galaxy S III was every bit as popular as the pre-launch hype anticipated, with GfK sales figures quoted by the FT claiming Samsung’s new flagship took 18% of all sales across the UK phone market in its launch week. Which is extra impressive considering the messy stock situation, which saw the blue S3 variant delayed and the white model rather hard to find as well.
Apple’s iPhone 4S has been suffering as a result of Samsung’s launch, says GfK, with Apple’s latest model dropping from holding a 25% share of smartphone sales in March, to a 20% share in June. Well done this man:
The FT report is here, but you may need to register/login to read it. The Telegraph has ripped out most of the key facts and can be read here, should you not believe the above words and numbers.

/ July 3, 2012It accounted for 18% of smartphone sales in the month of June, which is entirely different from ‘capturing 18% of a market’. The ‘market’ is everybody currently owning a smartphone, this is just the latest sales. Oh, and the iPhone 4S accounted for 20% of all smartphone sales. So even though Apple’s latest smartphone is 8~9 months old, it still sold more of them than Samsung’s brand new smartphone at launch.

/ July 3, 2012Well, it’s a different way of putting it, but I’m sure everyone gets the meaning all the same.

/ July 3, 2012No, it really doesn’t The headline is misleading. UK Market =! sales for one week.

/ July 3, 2012Well then I’ll change it to clear things up. Thanks. Internet arguments are very 2005 as far as I’m concerned.
LooK_at_this_guy
/ July 3, 2012Way to dodge the topic by saying you’re somehow above “internet arguments”. You sensationalized your title and article to get web traffic…laughable.
Gary_C
/ July 3, 2012I suspect this little furore is more to do with having slightly disrespected an Apple product. Still, I’m always happy to change things when it’s brought to my attention that they don’t make sense. I don’t want to look stupid on the internet. So thanks again (really).

/ July 3, 2012I’ll still be your friend Gary! :)
To all the haters. Don’t hate, appreciate!

/ July 3, 2012Your title says something that hasn’t happened. It’s not a matter of perspective, it’s what’s correct and what isn’t.

/ July 4, 2012Don’t worry Gary, we get your point, these android haters can go take a hike.

/ July 4, 2012The quibblers don’t know what they’re talking about. Market share is usually measured by unit sales (or sometimes by revenue sales, called “revenue market share”), NOT by installed base. Therefore, you are right, Gary_C, and the quibblers obviously got their business diplomas from Cuckooland University.

/ July 5, 2012Apple fans are the only fans who are happy that Apple is making usurious level of profits off them and are sad that competition is at least making a dent in that usurious level of profits.
Gary_C
/ July 5, 2012Cor, word of the day in using “usurious” there. Had to look that one up. 10/10.

/ July 6, 2012The big question is…what will happen to HTC? Do declining profits infer stagnation or is it simply alarmist? Won’t somebody think of the children?!
Internet arguments will continue until the day the entire human race is wiped out, which I hope is sometime soon.
