After months upon months of teasing, Sky has finally launched the Android version of its TV streaming Sky Go app. As the satellite broadcaster previously mentioned, this initial version of the app only supports “a selection of the most popular Android handsets” meaning it’ll work on these particular models right now…
HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Incredible, HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S II
…which is an bit limited, but those are the most popular models out there by far, so it’s not a complete compatibility disaster.
Sky Go for Android is on the Android Market here. Judging by the Market’s user comments so far, Android Sky Go doesn’t work on rooted models. Which is causing some one-star angst.

/ February 21, 2012My biggest problem with it is that it doesn’t include the on-demand side of things… I’m not particularly interested in the live stuff on my phone.

/ February 21, 2012Sky, I was looking forward to this. Yet, you only allow it on two devices and only one change of registered devices per month. Not fun trying to make it work on a Sensation XE.

Great when its almost identical to the standard sensation

/ February 22, 2012Kind of. Only Sky News works as my phone is rooted and is on ICS.
It’s reported that if you’re rooted only Sky News works, contrary to what Sky say it seems to work fine on ICS though.
Basically, you need to download a patched version from XDA and it should work fine assuming you have a stock, un rooted ROM.

/ February 25, 2012I’ve downloaded the app onto my Samsung Galaxy S II- which didn’t work properly – and then updated it. Now? “Sky Go doesn’t support rooted hardware”
What the frikking hell?!?
Is this another attempt by Murdoch trying to thwart people using technology as they should? Jeez. What a twonk.
