According to data published in the Telegraph today, Sony is rather pleased with how its Tablet S has been selling – claiming the more traditional tablet-shaped one of its pair of Android 3.2 devices took 26% of the Android tablet market, by value, during October.
It’s not all amazing news, though, as Sony also says that it was almost certainly beaten by the aggressively priced BlackBerry PlayBooks over Christmas. It’s a little odd to think that the general public would rather buy a near-dead device than one with an actual future.
The Sony Tablet S launched in mid-September with the Tablet P not arriving until November, so this data only covers sales of the more traditional Tablet S. So it must’ve done pretty well for itself.

Bearing in mind that this was before Sony’s price cut for the S, this is not such an impressive stat. This was the launch month and I expect lots of people ran out and bought because of the brand name. I bet it never “owned” December. If it had sold so well why did Sony cut the price? I smell marketing bullshine.

/ January 25, 2012Depends how the figures are jiggered with. Might not include eg internet and mail order sails, in which case those Sony Centres dotted around the country would be a big help.
Come next Xmas though, I assume we’re all fairly sure what the best-selling Android tablet will be in the UK. Maybe even the best-selling tablet, full stop.
