Sonic 4 Episode 2 coming to Android – but only Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 devices

Great news for fans of SEGA’s modern output – the company’s bringing the next chapter of Sonic The Hedgehog 4 to Android. But there’s a catch. It’ll be exclusively available for Tegra powered devices, so you’ll need something fairly new and tablet-proportioned to play it.

Here’s a snippet from SEGA’s announcement, which includes the exciting news that…

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II will support Android mobile devices powered by the NVIDIA® Tegra® mobile processor. It will be available on the Android Market and featured on the Tegra Zone app. In addition, SEGA and NVIDIA are working closely together to develop an even more enhanced version for Tegra 3, the world’s first quad-core mobile processor.

…an enhanced version for Tegra 3 tablets is on the way as well.

There’s a “teaser trailer” for the next chapter of Sonic 4 up on YouTube, but there’s no game footage or anything exciting in it. But look, the Tegra and Android Market logos pop up at the end. That’s what passes for excitement around here nowadays.

Thats good, am loving that android has now reached the mainstream when it comes to apps, EA have brought most of their apps to android now, and now sega has started doing the same, the last thing that ios devices had over android has startet to become irrelevant.

I just saw on youtube as well that street fighter 4 on android, there was even a link to download a pirated copy of it, so that must be prepping for the android market.

Also, liking the new layout/ fonts, isit the new ICS roboto font?

No, I think it’s probably just Verdana. Not a big change, but the “back end” is a mess of broken sidebars and conflicting edits, so it was time for a bit of a refresh.

Sorry mate, but i’m not liking the look of this ‘refresh’ at all. So many times i keep hearing the same old thing: time for a lick of new paint, refresh, re-design, yada yada yada, etc, etc BUT 9 times out of 10 the saying goes if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! I’m afraid that really does apply here. Why oh why does no one ever listen!

Verdana doesn’t suit. Please go back to how it was.

It’s just some slightly different fonts, this isn’t like when Gawker broke the entire internet.

And like I said, the old template was half-broken and was causing hosting issues thanks to various edit-and-hope hacks, so it really needed fixing.

anyway, episode 2 will be available on all wp7 devices, and none of those are Tegra devices, one rule for android and another rule for wp7?

Some sites are saying it’s not a Tegra exclusive after all. In which case, it was just a poorly-worded press release from SEGA.

I’ll see if any of my old SEGA employee email addresses still work and try to find out for sure.

it’s looking really badly worded, I can understand the Wii not getting it, as the Wii did not get Sonic CD either due to file size limitations

Limiting games to certain GPU is just stupid. Hope it will run on other phones with this “Tegra2 emulator”

I am sure this will work on plenty of Android phones without a Tegra 2 GPU. Riptide GP works (and looks) fine on my Desire HD, which “only” has an Adreno 205.

I have also read that the Adreno 220 GPU in the HTC Sensation is as powerful as the Tegra 2 GPU (if not more so!)

Heck GTA 3 works on my single core Desire HD, despite Rockstar stating that it was only for dual core Android handsets. I suspect it is just marketing PR to highlight “the power” of Tegra 2 GPU in handsets by Nvidia…
