Amazon Android Appstore now live in Europe

Amazon has finally pushed its US-only Appstore for Android out to (at least some of) the rest of the world, with UK users and those in a handful of other countries now able to download apps via the official Amazon Appstore app.

The Amazon Appstore web site still carries the disclaimer that it’s only available to customers in the US, but we’ve just tried using the Amazon Appstore app on Android in the UK…

…and look, it’s actually working. Prices are still showing in dollars, but still. Free App of the Day is now GO without any region hacking. Ace. You’ll need to manually install the Amazon Appstore app direct from Amazon to make it work. Let us know if you also have access.

UPDATE:
It looks like the fun has ended after 24 hours – access is now denied to everyone again. We can only wonder if this was a “test” or a momentary “balls up”.

It was working for me for about a week until you posted the news here. Now it’s not working anymore.

Quite clearly it is your mistake for bringing it to their attention.

Don’t worry, the free app of the day has gone rubbish lately, I’ve been using the American one for a few months now and in that time I have only downloaded about 3 of the Apps they gave away.
Many users are complaining that more recently the featured App is a rubbish game, newly released by an unknown developer with no feedback. Some have even suggested Amazon have had Apps made for them just to put out “free”
I did read a very damning article from a disgruntled developer a few weeks back regarding giving Apps away with no benefit to the developer. Either that or a lot are going to Getjar instead!
Although one thing Amazon does have going for it is the customer reviews are a lot more reliable than the Android Market spam.
