Despite surface evidence to the contrary in the form of many, many price cuts since its launch, Sony Ericsson has told Eurogamer that its Xperia PLAY gaming phone is “meeting expectations” – but the Christmas sales period will be key in determining whether the phone is deemed a success or not.
“We’re very pleased with how it’s going. It’s meeting expectations, but our expectations for the end of the year are a lot higher” said Dominic Neil-Dwyer, the company’s head of market development. When pushed on the subject of an Xperia PLAY 2 to combat the rise of the more powerful, headline-grabbing dual-core smartphones, Sony Ericsson’s man said…
“When you go into things like dual core versus single core, what a lot of people don’t understand or appreciate is the actual benchmarking and the ability of a device to do what they do, dual core doesn’t mean it’s faster. This is PlayStation Certified, and it’s been proven by all of the discussions of a very technical nature we’re having with publishers”
Which reads like a definite “NO” to the idea of any Xperia PLAY hardware update in the near future…
…meaning this is likely to be remembered by history as a a very strange one-off oddity. Which means we have to buy one, as the one thing we like is a good bit of niche hardware that fails to gain critical mass.

/ September 7, 2011It would have done a lot better if it wasn’t “PS1 certified”. Nostalgia is fine for about 5 mins, then you realise that the games are kinda boring compared to what you’re used to, and you certainly aren’t going to drop a load of change re-fitting out your old PS1 library.
Now if the phone had been “PS2 certified” that’d be a whole other ball game – i’d have got one in a second!

/ September 7, 2011It would be a shame if this were never given a hardware update. Dual core processors seem largely unnecessary in smart phones (my 1.0 GHz single-core Droid X has always felt snappy), but a phone that’s playing high-quality games could potentially benefit.
