Sony Tablet S and Tablet P priced – €479 and €599

Sony has just delivered its press conference at this year’s IFA tech trade event, with both of its recently revealed Android tablets getting a serious amount of stage time.

Confirming the new official names of Sony Tablet P and Sony Tablet S, the company also talked about launch prices of the two Android devices for the first time, revealing that the Sony Tablet S will cost 479 euro (around £420) and will arrive at the “end of September”. The Tablet P will arrive in “November” for 599 euro (around £530).

And in case you can’t remember which is which – the Sony Tablet P is the bonkers dual-screened hinged device, while the Tablet S is the 10″ slab with the curved back. More photos of both are on our original announcement thing from April .

Sony also confirmed a few tech specs. The Tablet S has an excellent 1280×800 screen resolution and will arrive running Android 3.1, which the Tablet P runs at 1024×480 across its two screens and will feature Android 3.2 at launch. Full spec sheet for both below:

£400+ or an Acer Iconica at £260.
Sony will sell about 3 tablets at those prices. Ridiculous. If there is one thing to be learnt from the HP touchpad debacle, it is that overpriced stuff doesn’t sell. These tablets need to be significantly cheaper than an iPad to sell in any profitable numbers. I really want to see an Android tab succeed but none of the current crop seem to really want to have a go.

Don’t talk nonsense. Here are some facts for you to chew over.

Sony kit is premium kit, it also demands premium prices, but there are plenty of people willing to pay a bit for for something decent. You might be happy driving a Yugo, but i’m not. Stop being such a cheapskate.

The Iconia is 7in mid-range, the Sony is 10in high-end

ANYTHING with a 75% discount will sell like hotcakes.

I hate to say it, but Android is not perceived as “premium”. Android is budget, Apple is premium. It doesn’t matter if you stick a Sony label on it, people won’t buy it. Come back to me in six months, at those prices it’ll be dead in the water. Don’t get me wrong, it’s all in the marketing so maybe Sony will shift a few of these but if image is what will make these sell, surely it’s market demographic already has an iPad.

  2. I get an impression from the specs that the quoted resolution for the P is 1024×480 per screen, or 1024×960 (which makes sense, as it is nearly square when opened).
Have to agree with the other commenter, the prices are too high.
