It looks like HTC has pushed out a new over-the-air update for its HTC Desire HD, with a few users reporting a new OS upgrade appearing over the last day or so. The update takes the Desire HD up to software version 2.50.405.2 and claims to bring “Wi-fi performance improvements” to the big Android phone.
It’s a 19.8MB file and out there right now, floating around in the ether.
Thanks to reader Brian for the tip. Let us know if anyone manages a successful install – we assume this’ll only be for unlocked versions of the HD right now.

/ July 19, 2011I’ve downloaded and installed it to my unlocked DHD with no problems.
I haven’t had an opportunity to check out the wi-fi improvements just yet, but I swear the notification bar is now a tiny bit thicker. I’m viciously hung over so I might be imagining it.
I can’t see anything else different.

/ July 19, 2011I hope this fixes the “phone dialer problem” I was having, which seemed to have an impact on the battery.

/ July 19, 2011I hope so too. I’m waiting for my DHD to juice up before it’ll let me install the update. My battery life has plummeted since the gingerbread update. And I reckon that Epitiro 3G survey app is eating my battery too.

/ July 19, 2011I’m having the same issues with Dialer taking a big double digit % bite out of my battery. The ‘included packages’ are Phone, Orange Plus and Dialer Storage if anyone can help? Its is especially annoying since I literally make 4 calls a month…
Seems to have directly replaced the Android OS issues that ate my battery before I upgraded!

/ July 19, 2011Just upgraded, websites do seem to render quicker, like the bbb site, lots on it and it did seem to load a lot faster. Thanks HTC!

/ July 19, 2011Just check your GPS still works as I found out last week when I updated mine does not – have a look at the Vodafone Forum thread I started for more info:

From what I hear, it’s not just Vodafone branded phones that are being affected…

/ July 19, 2011Try this; (blatently stolen from Android Forums)
“Tried a method which seems to have solved the problem (I hope). Downloaded app “GPS Status” from Android market.
Then followed instructions as found on this site
(GPS Fix For CyanogenMod 6 On The Nexus One | Android News, Reviews, Applications, Games, Phones, Devices, Tips, Mods, Videos, Podcasts – Android Police), originally advice for Nexus One owners:
Take your SIM out of the Nexus One
Power on the device
Turn WiFi on
Turn GPS on
Open application: GPS Status
Go into its Settings menu
Click on GPS and Sensors
Click Manage A-GPS state
Click Reset
Click Manage A-GPS state again
Click Download
Now put your phone on a stable, straight surface in order to enable the phone to get a lock. This time, you’ll see your phone get the lock back way faster than before.
With that done, now it’s time to put your SIM back in and use the network to secure a quick GPS fix as well.”
Reported working for all HD users with this issue.. going to try it on the missus phone this evening

/ July 19, 2011Can’t wait to update when I get home from work. I have noticed that I get lot of lag on my DHD since 2.3 update, hope this has been addressed. Has anyone else had that issue after updating to gingerbread?
Sparky
/ July 19, 2011Successfully installed. Seem exactly the same as before to me! No GPS issue thankfully.

/ July 19, 2011This is AWFUL, the previous update stopped my messages from appearing in the notification window, so i was excited to see this update.
However this is even worse, they fixed missing message notification, but now the radio signal is so poor that it keeps crashing and asking to select a network, also when i try to use the camera it sometimes adjusts focus then goes to a black screen for a second, when it comes back it goes through it again and again.
Im so desperate that i tried to install previous roms ,but this version wont let you turn s-off so i cant go backwards, i was honestly happy with the shipped software which worked perfectly.
Anyone else having these problems.?

/ July 20, 2011Here in Scotland I got my HTC Desire HD update yesterday. It’s a unbranded, unlocked phone. I learned long ago never to buy a phone company branded phone…too much hassle and restrictions!
Seems to work well. Can’t say I had any trouble with my Wi-fi before this last update. Though I did before the Android v2.3.3 update. But using the Wifi fixer app fixed that.
I use the Go Launcher Pro Home Launcher app.
With this update being quite large, can’t believe it’s just wi-fi fixes.
My build is now : 2.50.405.2 on Android v2.3.3
I’m quite happy with my HTC HD now I know to pare down the auto-sync eagerness of the phone.

/ July 21, 2011This update seems to have created a new bug for me.
Sometimes, the top 3/4 of the screen become unrespoonsive to touch. The only thing that brings it back is a restart.
Anyone else got this problem????
richie
/ July 21, 2011nope! running smooth for me.
kevin
/ July 25, 2011Seems to have stabilised now. I’ll keep an eye on it. Maybe my screen’s on the blink and it’s just coincidental.

/ July 21, 2011Working fine, dhd locked to t-mobile. Battery life seems loads better, not sure why. Still had over half left after work which is unheard of.
Stays connected to my WiFi now too.
All good so far.

/ July 26, 2011I too have had the update.
When i first upgraded to 2.3.3, i could connect to a router but not receive any data which was weird. I contacted HTC and they advised to use the Use Static IP settings which worked. This update has got rid of the need to do this and allows to connect once more to all wifi signals.
I also was having a GPS issue before this new update so downloaded GPS Status from the market and reset everything and so far so good!!

/ July 27, 2011I now seem to be having battery issues though now ffs….. Having had the phone on charge all night i have switched it on this morning and after 2 hours of no use, the first notch of battery has gone!!
