VIDEO: Kogan Agora 7 Android tablet in action – for £120

It looks like there could soon be a new ultra-affordable Android tablet KING back in town, in the shape of the Kogan Agora 7. It’s a 7″ Android tablet, with a 1GHz processor, running Android 2.3.

The big news is… a capacitive screen and a direct-from-the-maker retail price of £120. This could decimate everything else if Kogan does manage to get it out for that price in reasonable numbers.

The £120 price comes from the description beneath the video, uploaded by Kogan itself, plus it’s listed for the same cost – and even a little less if you pre-order now – over on the Kogan web store

…with a July 8 launch date attached to the arrival of the next batch of stock. The initial run was first announced this back in April and there are a few reviews out there of this batch of tablets. None overly complementary, but then for £120…

  1. In another year we’ll be seeing decent tablets around that price I expect but for now that price will more than likely be something you want to get for the kids to play with.

I can never remember which is the good screen, capacitive or resistive. Google here we come.

    Some competition for the AndyPad?

  4. It does look like a decent proposition. I am still waiting for a sub £100 tablet though as this will be the price at which they will truly become mainstream…

    Pretty awful review: http://r-views.blogspot.com/2011/06/kogan-agora-7-android-tablet.html

Device keeps turning itself on and off unless it is left in airplane mode which means one cannot use wifi. Screen is awful. etc. Shame, I usually like Kogan, but while it is cheap, it is still too expensive for something that doesn’t work!

I should get mine tomorrow if the dispatch is to be belived.
I’ll post some comments up after I have had a play with it.
Latest real users reviews look good, formal reviews all look bad but I will make my own mind up.

That’d be ace. I think some reviews don’t take into account the price. When you’re spending your own money on it, it’s much more of a consideration.

I am very happy with it.
It does have some issues – but hopefully they can be sorted with updates.
Using screen when charging is very nasty – touch does not work well then. Waking up when in standby to check for something – means battery does not last great – but I have been getting about 5 hours use from mine and that is with wireless on for nearly all of that! For the 100 GB pounds I paid I am very happy.

Just received mine (I’m in the UK).
Started the unit up and logged into the market. The unit works fine thus far.
Then I installed Flash 10.3 and now the unit does not come out of sleep mode, after a few minutes down time, using any of the buttons (sleep of death).
The only method of recovery is to press the reset button on the rear of the unit which brings the unit up again but I will have lost any context and any unsaved data in the process.
I have repeated this procedure three times now following factory data resets and the problem I describe is 100% repeatable.
If Kogan do not sort this out ASAP I will be returning the unit.
Does anyone else have this problem?

OK, so I have done some benchmarks for those that like them. It will also help in gauging what updated SW does and how other OS versions perform once rooting is sorted out.
My Kogan is stock; wireless was connected, all tests performed with battery. All tests done 5 times and average shown.
These tests cover CPU and Graphics (Mali-400) as well as other things. Applications all from Marketplace. There are lots of other benchmarking apps out there but I’ve just used these. It just goes to show that they are not foolproof when you get such varying results.
