We’ve just been ploughing through the latest site statistics* and had a quick look at the browser versions used to access it over the last hour. It turns out that more people read Eurodroid using a mobile phone than with Internet Explorer. We thought that was interesting. We thought the “internet” might enjoy that statistic.
So here’s a graph. Data might be skewed by the time of day, as in some of you lazier lot might still be in bed as it’s only just gone midday.
And that 11.4% using mobiles consists of 7.2% people on Android phones. We should probably do something about getting a mobile version of the site working, then.
*It’s the weekend. It’s time to party.

/ June 11, 2011This makes me very happy.

/ June 11, 2011People still using IE most likely don’t visit anything even slightly “techy.” Their the people that still don’t know what the term “browser” even means. They literally think they have to use IE because its the only way to connect to the internet. . . yes, I’ve been told that. It’s like the people that used AOL back in the day because they thought they had to have AOL to connect to the internet.

/ June 11, 2011I would say the same about Firefox and Chrome users too… I mean come on.. Firefox is a bloated mess, and Chrome is VERY feature lite and not even the fastest anymore.

/ June 12, 2011I think you missed my point. In order for someone to download Firefox or Chrome they most likely know what a “browser” is. Nowhere in my comment did I make any statements about “bloated,” speed of the browsers, features, etc.
Main point, people that never change their browser on a PC often don’t know what a browser is and just use what is there without knowing there are any other options and therefore, we can most likely conclude that these same people won’t be reading tech sites.
But hey, apparently you want to see “bloated, “browser features,” and “browser speeds” in comments where they don’t exist ;)
Maybe I should have said “Many people still using IE” to qualify my statement. . . of course not everyone using IE is clueless–they just like a bad browser ;)

/ June 11, 2011I think it’s probably the people at work who use IE since it’s like the ‘corporate’ browser.
And yeah Firefox has turned into a fatty. Chrome feels the fastest IMO regardless of benchmarks.
Simon
/ June 11, 2011Chrome is pretty fast in bencharks, but Opera is usually faster in benchmarks, and feels ALOT faster in real-world browsing, it’s also way more fully featured (Opera is Web, Mail, News, RSS, IRC and loads more besides) and 9MB download (Chrome is like 35MB or something)

/ June 12, 2011I like Opera after Chrome mainly due to Chrome’s omnibar, but I only use Opera for the Turbo feature. That’s true, it manages to pack in a ton features in a tiny size. I might give Opera a go for a week or so.

/ June 11, 2011Yes, a mobile site would be very welcome. The first time – the very first time – I have ever viewed this site on a desktop browser was today, to make this comment. (I use Chrome, BTW).

/ June 11, 2011I use Chrome and an Iphone -bought by my parents when I still didn’t know about this stuff :( – I’m planning on switching to Android the moment my contract finishes.
I think this is more indicative, if anything, of the kind of people that are attracted to an Android site: Android users, obviously. And young/techy/nerdy people. Even IE6 still has about 10% of worldwide browsing, and with all the other versions it’s still over 50%; it’s just that their users don’t care Gingerbread vs Honeycomb.

/ June 12, 2011Are you taking account of people who read the website via RSS readers? I mostly get my daily Eurodroid fix through the Google Reader app on my phone
Gary C
/ June 13, 2011No, RSS readers not included. RSS readers don’t officially exist, as they don’t load the page counting script.

/ June 12, 2011Your site works well on phone already.

/ June 12, 2011I do not mean to be nitpicking, but just want to clarify. Is only 7.2% of your mass of mobile readers using Android? It sounds very low, if that is true.
Or is it supposed to be (7.2 / 11.4) * 100 = 63.2%?
Either way, it would be interesting to see the top 5 breakdown of mobile users.
Anonymous
/ June 12, 2011I think it’s the 63%.
Gary C
/ June 13, 2011No, 11% of all readers are on a phone. 7% of all readers use Android, not 7% of that 11%. I agree that was a bit poorly explained. As usual.

/ June 13, 2011Any updates on the mobile version of this wonderful site yet?
I for one would welcome it, as I currently use one of the lower end phones with a small screen.

/ June 13, 2011I tried putting on that WP Touch mobile theme everyone likes, but then a few people said they were seeing it when using their desktops. Maybe you should just use an RSS option?
