Dropbox to come pre-loaded on some Sony Ericsson Android phones

The amazing, life-changing, empowering, and very, very useful Dropbox is about to find itself a new audience, thanks to the maker doing a deal to pre-load the mobile app on several of Sony Ericsson’s current Android phones across Europe.

Here’s a little bit from the Dropbox announcement:

Beginning today, Sony Ericsson will sell Dropbox-powered Android phones in ten countries including the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, and Italy. These phones include the shiny new Arc and Play. (Sorry Verizoners, we’re working on it!)

Rather sadly, there’s already a minor backlash going on in the comments beneath the announcement, claiming this is simply adding to the “bloatware” burden that infects some of today’s Android phones.

Normally we’d agree as there’s nothing worse than having to spend your first few hours with a new tech purchase binning and hiding all the junk it comes with, but… Dropbox? Bloatware?

Indeed, Dropbox is one of those essential things I do install.

I’d rather ditch the bundling of the Kindle app. The day I buy a Kindle book from Amazon will be over my own dead body..

EPUB is where the industry is heading, and Kindle is just a ugly iTunes lock-in type wart in the way of that.

It works, though. Bought my first ever e-book via Amazon a couple of weeks ago (it was on sale for 99p, and could be classed as research) and it pinged straight onto my phone. But the Kindle site could indeed do with being a bit more accessible. God knows how it’s caught on so well looking like such a confusing mess.

Amazon’s recommendation engine and existing customer base has probably helped it catch on. The lending thing may also be attractive to some people I suppose.
