HTC: Android 2.3 for unbranded HTC Desire HD and Incredible S due "on 16th May"

HTC has just issued a further clarification on the arrival of the Android 2.3 upgrade for the HTC Desire HD and Incredible S, following the recent release of the Vodafone version and the subsequent update on the status of the unbranded version for everyone not tied into a network.

Long story short – the hardware maker now says the Android “Gingerbread” update for unbranded Desire HD and Incredible S phones will launch on May 16. Here’s the quote direct from HTC:

“We’ve been pushing this really hard and are pleased to announce that we are aiming to have the HTC Gingerbread update for unlocked HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible S models available on 16th May 2011. For those waiting for their specific operator update, rest assured that we’re working very closely with each operator to get this just right and will update you as soon as we possibly can”

So there you go.

htc desire hd android 23 update

Just to sum up the situation regarding Android 2.3 on the Desire HD and Incredible S. First of all, HTC said it was out for all phones. Then Vodafone issued its version of the update. Then HTC said the update wasn’t out in the UK. Now it’s DEFINITELY going to be out on May 16 for those of you with unbranded phones (ie, ones without custom network apps & boot screens and so on).

Are we clear?

maybe they should tell their support section. they appear to think the release is out and being staggered so as not to overload their servers!!
Typical HTC. Why publish the OTA details if it is not yet available?

  4. I wonder if the Desire will ever get Gingerbeard, I suppose it considered a old phone now but it would be nice if it did receive another update..

It will, yes. It’s on the list.

In fact there are leaked test builds out there right now, if you’re up to the task.

What about a Sense update? Personally, I wouldn’t even mind sticking with froyo if they push sense 2.1. What does the Desire gain with 2.3 anyway?

             /  May 11, 2011

the desire will never get the sense update.
There is not enough built in memory.
Ive already got the leaked gingerbread rom, its gingerbread with sense 1.0

That’s a shame. Sense 2.1 is superb. Really not so much point in an update without that.

The Wildfire S strips out loads of Sense apps and has them as optional installs through HTC Hub. That must save enough space to get it running on the Desire?

I got my HTC Desire the first week it came out. To know that 1.) its now considered an ‘old’ phone is crazy talk….. and 2.) that by the time Orange get the update from HTC and then spend months screwing with it my 2 year contract will most likely be up. Not holding my breath for 2.3. Surprise me Orange!

I got it the same month, but I never felt it was the bleeding edge in smartphone tech… Mostly because of the old touch sensor, HTC launched the Incredible a bit later and stuck an Atmel Maxtouch inside, the same they use to date, I believe, a true multitouch sensor, as smooth as it gets. That’s my biggest gripe with the Desire, the battery life and sunlight illegibility are simple character flaws, easily dismissed…

Doing the download of Gingerbread System update as we speak for the unbranded Incredible S. Seems it came out sooner :)

Everything went fine! The Gingerbread FOTA took some time to download due to a slow wifi connection, but all is up and running at full steam. The increase in speed is readily noticeable :)

Something I particularly like, aside the speed increase, is the new notifications drop panel with a quick settings tab… neat.

    Hi All,

After reading this (I have an unbranded desire hd) I decided to change the date on my phone to 20/05/2011 and check for updates.. I received the notification that updates are available, but when I tried to download it got to 45% and then failed. Anyone else managed to change date and get the update to fully download early?

16th of may is for unbranded model.

If you got yours from a carrier then its up to them to give you the update once they add all their crapware.

expect anywhere from 1 week to 2 months for this to happen.
