If you’re tempted by HTC’s very nice-looking HTC Flyer Android tablet yet are HORRIFIED by the £599 asking price for the full power 3G version, there’s a cheaper way. The wi-fi only model.
UK retailer Currys is currently listing a 16GB non-3G model of the HTC Flyer with a price tag of £479.99 attached to it. Which is exactly the same as the current asking price for the 10″ XOOM.
Still way too much for a 7″ tablet, but heading in the right direction.

/ April 19, 2011Still too much.
Why are they all coming in so high. They are not iPads, and they have to find a market for themselves so pricing or way better specs is the only way.

/ April 19, 2011YouGov research out today has shown that £250 is the optimum price for the masses. It said at iPad prices tablets will only be niche products but once the price starts to drop then more and more will buy. I can imagine that soon Android vs the iPad will go the same way as Android vs iPhone – a range of devices with top end matching the Apple product on price but exceeding it on specs, slightly cheaper Android devices matching Apple but at a lower price and then many more devices at levels all the way down to the cheapest of PAYG.

The flyer is at least £100 too expensive. Just updated my blog on this very subject if anyone is interested…

/ April 20, 2011There was a press release about it. It also said that about 70% of tablet users were buying one “in addition” to their PCs and laptops.
Which makes me all the more convinced it’s a weird, Apple-led micro-trend that’ll soon fade away.
