Good news for those still more than content with their current HTC Desires – UK network Three has once again confirmed plans for the “Gingerbread” update, stating that the Desire will get Android 2.3 “in the middle of May”.
Hopefully that means the update for unlocked phones could even appear a little sooner. Here’s the quote, delivered by a Three UK employee in this here internet discussion:
Start checking for updates once an hour, every day, non stop, basically.

/ April 13, 2011HOPE TO GOD [any god] it comes with sense 3.0
Simon
/ April 13, 2011It won’t be coming with Sense 3. HTC have said this many times that the Desire, Desire HD, Desire Z and Incredible S will only be getting Sense 2.3

/ April 13, 2011Could you provide a link to where they have said this?
Sense 2.3 would still be an upgrade for the desire right? Thats whats on the HD, Z, etc?

Most likely it’ll be the same version of Sense as found on the Desire S which isn’t the new Sense 3. The Desire S is Android 2.3.2 so I would expect this will be on the Desire rather than the newer Android 2.3.3

/ April 13, 2011It’s true, the twitter feed @htc had repeated many times that the desire HD’s hardware doesn’t support sense 3. It’s disappointing that the phone, launched only 7 months ago, is effectively “not good enough” and it makes you wonder what is good enough? There can’t be that many people out there who will buy a new phone every few months? Anyway, having been used to HTC’s update “schedule” in the past, I’ll be expecting my desire hd to get gingerbread about August, whilst HTC’s newest quad core 3d superphone is still unobtainable due to the lengthly mobile cotract I signed up to :-(
Simon
/ April 14, 2011I don’t consider it a problem. The phone will be getting an update to at least Android 2.3.2, maybe even 2.3.3, but not the brand new Sense. There aren’t that many new features that I would say are ‘must have’ so most people won’t be missing out.
The most important thing to me is having Gingerbread. Sense doesn’t interest me.

/ April 14, 2011the new sense 3.0 was designed to run on a dual core chip, i imagine it takes quite abit of grunt for it to run. also why the original desire, the phone i have is still on sense 1.0 – and apparently when it gets its gingerbread update, will still only be on sense 1.0. This is because sense 1.0 takes near 250mb of space while sense 2.0 takes 350mb and the original desire only has 250 partitioned for sytem data. So think yourself lucky, the desire isnt much older than the hd and all shops are still selling the desire, and where stuck on sense 1.0
(i actually run cm7 so i dont really care tbh lol i realised i only used the music widget and calender widget, and both can be replaced, and the speed increase of cm7 is quite outstanding.

/ April 14, 2011Ok, I agree that sense is not the only thing on the phone but it is still annoying to buy a phone and 7 months later it isn’t good enough and at the same time having to wait for the Google OS that was released many months ago. HTC need to decide that as their older phones can no longer support the latest skin that they release the stock Google OS for the phone and end consumers can choose the improvements of Google or stick with the old OS with sense. And please, I understand about rooting phones and custom roms but I would much rather have HTC say “here is stock gingerbread install it if you want” then trying the nightly build of some cooked Rom that may have 95% functionality…

/ April 14, 2011The built-in SIP client could ring a few bells of need for me so i can dump SIPDroid on my 2.2 HTC Desire for one :), other than that the power-management fixes are welcome aswell in 2.3.

/ June 13, 2011They’ve been promising “end of June for about 5 months”.
It’s rumours from websites and magazines that have caused this April/May myth.
17 days to go then everyone can go nuts! Well that’s the SIM free version. God knows when the carriers will sort it out :)
