It looks like 2011 is going to be the year that BIG BUSINESS finally catches up and starts showing Android the same amount of respect its been showing Apple’s mobile OS, with some big players entering the Android app arena.
Like UK newspaper the Independent, which appears to be the first of the major publishers to launch a full, official news app for Android.
The Independent app is published by third-party app maker Handmark, which has stuck in numerous tabs and a useful “save” feature that lets you queue up articles for reading offline. There are ads along the bottom, plus a suspiciously promotional “More Apps” tab that’s selling an odd selection of paid apps.
On the plus side, it seems to offer a relatively complete copy of what’s available on the web site. The tabs could be a little more responsive, though. Thanks to reader Matt for the tip. Check it out on the Android Market here.

/ April 4, 2011Aah so it has. I was the one who provided the tip and checked beforehand by searching for ‘the daily telegraph’ on the market but it didnt show this app – seems they don’t use that name anymore!
The Daily Telegraph app seems reasonably good apart from being not much more than a skin for the mobile site. From looking at the reviews the first one is February 2009 so it appears The Independent wasn’t even close to being the first!
