Wi-fi Motorola XOOM now £499, due first week of April

After yesterday’s embarrassing little slip we now have a revised price for the wi-fi version of the 10.1″ Motorola XOOM Android 3.0 tablet – which PC World will let you pre-order for delivery on or around April 9th. It’s down as £499 on the site right now.

There’s a disclaimer in bold text that the precise release date for the XOOM is yet to be confirmed, so don’t book the time off work just yet.

We preferred yesterday’s price, but that’s still not a complete financial disaster. We’ve put most of the XOOM tech specs on the internet before – here. Link via Phandroid.

Too much. Give it a few months, once there’s been competing Tegra tablets from Samsung, Acer, Asus and Toshiba released I think the prices may be more realistic.

The Xoom is going to have to be competitively priced to the iPad (1 or 2) if it is to succeed in grabbing a slice of 1Q/2011 market share. There are plenty of other tablets on their way hot on the heels of the Xoom.

  3. I read something interesting about why Android tablets don’t undercut iPads too much. Basically, Apple sells most of the iPads itself so it keeps most of the money, whereas for Android tablets the manufacturer often only gets half the price the retailer sells it for, so this means in effect that the price of Android tablets can’t be less than double the price of the components. This may explain the high price for the Xoom.

    • This will also explain why the Advent Vega is so much cheaper, since it is both manufactured and sold by Dixons Group.

Another explanation for the low price on the Advent Vega is… It’s really cheap HW. The Xoom screen is not the best on the market, but the one on the Advent Vega is, cheap.

But I’m really looking forward to the release of the 8.9″ Galaxy Tab end of this months… Rumours are that it’s going to be the first tablet out there with Super AMOLED goodness. :P
