Orange UK launches Android 2.2 FroYo update for its Galaxy S users

Limping in with an OS upgrade just before the end of the year is UK network Orange, which has today announced that its version of the FroYo Android 2.2 update for Samsung Galaxy S phones bought through the network is now available.

As ever in the weird world of Samsung, this is not an over-the-air update – you’ll need to download and apply the Android update through Samsung’s KIES desktop sync tool.

But then after that it’ll be like having a new telephone. And it didn’t even cost you anything. Thanks to reader Stu for the tip.

Thank you for the advice Mossy! I called Orange and really disappointed – they simply set that if the phone is functuanal and its working they cant replace it. No mater what I sed – that its not simply a phone but also the multimedia ,speed and functuonality its not the same without the latest update – was like talking to a wall.
    They undestand but wont help.
So , Mossy , I have follow your advice and its great. I had a little scare when the phone stayed forever on the “S” sign but after taking the battery for a minute ,everything was fine.
And I am agree with this also – now it is a great phone :)
I am still disappointed with Orange and have few tricks for them when the time for upgrade comes…

For those of you still deciding whether to ask for a replacement or flash the phone yourself, thought I would fill you in on my experiences with Orange’s new 2.2 handset.

Froyo seems to be a vast improvement. Phone is much more responsive and Samsung seem to have fixed a few of the things that bugged me in 2.1 (for example, Samsung’s email app now works much better).

I find all of Orange’s apps and customisations fairly pointless. They seem to work better than before, but I still prefer Samsung’s default apps for email and maps.

There are some totally unnecessary apps – such as demo games that can’t be removed. But they don’t seem to slow the phone down just by being there, so I have left them alone.

Overall, the improvements from 2.1 to 2.2 come from Samsung. There’s no reason why anyone would need Orange’s tweaks / apps, except possibly Orange Wednesday.

Just smash the phone n claim on insurance! Pay £15. If u get ur handset n upgrade to froyo id advise to do 3 button hard reset. I didnt n it messed up! Factory reset n still had problem. So hard reset n now works perfectly.
