We’ve been encountering sporadic reports of users being prompted to update the original HTC Desire over the last few days, with HTC apparently pushing a minor bug-fixing version of the Android 2.2 update to HTC Desire owners around the world.
The new update brings the HTC Desire up to software version 2.29.405.5 and no, we can’t find any official comment from HTC as to what it changes.
A word of warning – forum users are reporting trouble when updating Desires that have been “debranded” in any way, so you might want to hold off on performing any impulsive updates if you’ve been fiddling with it, until you’re sure it won’t turn your phone into a paperweight.
Thanks to readers Sveinung and Chris for the tip.

/ January 2, 2011updated two weeks ago, now find that I can’t check for software update any more (looks like not connecting to update server both over wifi and 3G). anyone have similar issues?

/ December 28, 2010Me too. Unlocked Desire on T-Mobile.
Seems more responsive, had noticed the occasional laggy moment on 2.29.405.2, seems to have fixed now.
A quick google says it also may be a camera update to help stuttering on 720p video – I cured that before by putting a fasted microSD in!

/ December 28, 2010Ah, nice thinking on the SD card issue. Would explain why so many people have different experience when it comes to glitches.

/ December 29, 2010I have a Vodafone Desire unlocked with code, work perfectly… very smooth :-D
The problems appear on debranded devices or rooted (do not update! for more info check xda-developers).

/ December 30, 2010If there is anything to be learned from the first few years of Android… NEVER PURCHASE A BRANDED HANDSET

/ December 31, 2010I disagree, Vodafone are very good at it. The HTC Legend on Voda got 2.2 even before the unbranded version. The Wildfire’s 2.2 was pushed out in under 5 minutes if I remember rightly
