Swype re-opens its Beta test – anyone can register

The maker of alternate Android keyboard Swype has re-opened its beta testing program, meaning anyone not already in possession of a copy of the line-drawing text entry tool can grab themselves a version for use.

Head off over to http://beta.swype.com/ and register yourself, download the installer and away you go. Swype is not on the Android Market. That is not the Swype business model. Here’s what to expect:

Swype is pleased to offer an (updated) Android Beta!
Here are the details:

In English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, and introducing French and an early, *UNSTABLE* preview release of Chinese Pinyin

Now includes support for Double-Tap-to-Edit, Cursor Restore, and Voice-to-Text (requires Google Voice Search be included in your system firmware)

HVGA, WVGA, and WVGA854 Resolutions – don’t worry we’ll detect this automatically. Sorry, no QVGA

Limited End User Support – mostly via our forum

If your phone came pre-installed with Swype DO NOT download this beta (it won’t work)

We flirt with using Swype occasionally. It’s clever and feels very futuristic – but the way you come CRASHING TO A HALT when typing the odd word ruins any sense of speed gain. Maybe it’s just a practice thing, though. Might be just us. Often is. Link via Android & Me.

Broken RSS feeds is one of my trademarks. What’s wrong with it? It’s all done automatically through WordPress.

  3. I’ve signed up for the beta, as I’ve been wanting to try Swype for a while. I’m going to give it a good hammering over the Christmas holidays to see whether or not it deserves to replace SwiftKey on my phone. It does look and feel undeniable cool and futuristic, but I get what you mean about whether or not there is a real speed increase.
