Finally we have some concrete word from T-Mobile about the status of the “FroYo” Android 2.2 update for its Samsung Galaxy S. It looks like it will arrive today, with T-Mobile the first network to offer the Galaxy S update over-the-air rather than through Samsung’s pretty awful KIES desktop sync tool.
Here’s what T-Mobile has just said regarding the Galaxy S update:
Thanks a lot for all your patience regarding the Galaxy S froyo update.
Our handset team have been working closely with Samsung regarding this update and future updates and would like to share their news with you.
Our goal is to make the update process smoother and we are working to become the only mobile operator offering FOTA (Firmware over the Air) updates for the Samsung product range. The aim was and still is to have the FOTA update available at some point today. If for reasons outwith our control we are unable to have a FOTA update process fully functioning by close of play today, then we will make the update available for download via Samsung KIES tomorrow (Dec 1st)
Interesting that T-Mobile itself isn’t particularly sure that issuing the FroYo update for the Galaxy S over-the-air will work or not!
God speed, all Galaxy S owners on T-Mobile. Our thoughts will be with you this evening.

/ November 30, 2010Just had a thought, don’t handsets that support FOTA have a menu option to check for updates? Sure my Magic had it? Cannot find on my Galaxy S!

/ November 30, 2010Yes, they do. Guess it’s hidden from view on the GS but still an Android feature, so may pop up at any time. AT ANY TIME!
Suspect you’ll still be sobbing into KIES this time tomorrow, though…

/ December 1, 2010Well your right Gary! Sobbing into KIES now as I have had no FOTA and KIES says no update! You should see the forums now, the site is really slowing down. The thread mentioned is touching 11,000 views in last 23h!

/ November 30, 2010This is like saying, “Hey T-mobile, I delayed paying my bills from Summer because I wanted to be the first to pay it in the new year.
Hot News, T-mobile, your users are more interested in the software, than in your firmware update process.
You’ve certainly earned the first prize for being the most annoying, un-informative, power-drunk and un-professional mobile operator in the way the upgrade to Android 2.2 has been handled.
Sony Ericcson Xperia phones sold in July on T-mobile this year still on 1.6 ???
..enjoy your prize, you deserve it !

/ November 30, 2010Just another reason to go SIM free, or buy unbranded thru CPW or similar. When will the carriers learn not to tinker with stock firmware, and let the manufacturers handle the updates.
