It looks like Bert Nordberg, the CEO of Sony Ericsson, is softening us up prior to an official announcement of the “PlayStation Phone” next year. Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal “There’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere” when asked about the PlayStation Phone rumours and leaks.
Bert also said “the future might be brighter” when questioned why we’ve not yet seen a PlayStation-branded Sony Ericsson gaming phone. Basically, don’t be surprised when this is announced:
Bert also said Sony Ericsson plans to make a lot of “noise” at Mobile World Congress next February, which is a pretty strong suggestion that Sony Ericsson will be announcing this “PlayStation Phone” or whatever the lawyers and marketing departments say it should be called, early next year.
Finally, the WSJ suggests the PlayStation Phone will actually be branded as an Xperia handset, which we’d imagine might be a compromise to appease Sony Computer Entertainment and help make this FANTASY PRODUCT happen.

/ November 21, 2010Im pretty certain this will be a Playstation branded phone that plays ANDROID games, that lives alongside the PROPER PSP that plays PROPER games….

/ November 21, 2010I don’t see the point in PlayStation branding if it only plays Android games. Surely it’ll have to support some sort of Sony PS1/PSP back catalogue emulation, else… where’s the money in it for SE?

/ November 21, 2010This device will be a day one purchase for me, if SE get one thing right…
I’ve bought around a dozen or so PlayStation Network titles that run on both PSP and PS3. These are branded as “Minis” and “PS One Classics”. If the PlayStation phone runs these titles then you’ll have a large number of users who already have a small library of games that they could bring over to the new platform. In a perfect world, PSP games would run too, although I’m not getting my hopes up for that one.
If there’s no compatibility with existing titles then I might just forget about it. There’s no point in purchasing all these digital-download titles if they need to be abandoned every time you change a phone or buy a new console. And, unlike the discs of yesteryear, you can’t sell your old downloads to other people after you change your console.
If the compatibility is there, then the PSN library of 1000+ full games will make the PS Phone a force to be reckoned with in the Android space.
