Analyst Gartner has released a new set of data that illustrates the growth of Android superbly well, showing just how far the OS has come over the last 12 months.
In Q3 of 2009, Android-powered devices accounted for just 3.5% of the global smartphone market. By Q3 of 2010, that had exploded up to 25.5%. That’s some seriously rapid growth, with Android-powered phones moving from selling 1.4m handsets Q3 of 2009 to over 20m in the same period of 2010.
As you might expect, Android’s gains have come from Symbian and RIM, with the former losing 8% and the latter dropping 6% over the last 12 months. Even Apple’s iOS market share has fallen a tiny percentage, dropping from 17.1% of the smartphone market to 16.7.
