We have an email from a Norwegian reader, reporting that the HTC Desire HD sold in the region is missing one entire letter from the phone’s keyboard – resulting in rather obvious typing and communication difficulties.
Here’s our Norwegian correspondent Jostein with the latest on the situation:
I recently purchased the HTC Desire HD and quickly discovered that the Norwegian letter “Ø” is non-existent the messaging application, neither with the onboard keyboard or the downloaded ‘Scandinavian keyboard’ app from the Android Market. It, however, works perfect in the recipient field, in the mail application and web browser. I asked HTC about it, and it confirmed the problem:
“This is a known problem, and we’re working on it. Currently there is no fix if it does not help to use the keyboard from the Scandinavian market … I would expect that it is an official solution soon, but I have no information on when it will come when there is a relatively new problem.”
Or perhaps HTC is simply trying to encourage new forms of “text speak” by gradually eliminating letters?

/ November 6, 2010Hm, why should some users have to replace one letter with another? O and Ø represent different sounds. If you wouldn’t be able to write, say, the letter R and someone would tell you to simply use P instead, since P and R look almost the same, would you be happy with that “solution”?

/ November 10, 2010Got the same problem. Just wrote a friend a message, I was supposed to use quite a few Øs, but that was not possible. I just went from an Iphone to an HTC, while my collegaues still have their iPhones. I can´t imagine how much they will mock me if i tell them I cant´t write Ø on my HTC. Guess i´ll get at lot of messages saying: Hi Kjell, ØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØØ -sent from my iPhone…

/ December 10, 2010Shit is hilarious! I live in Norway, HTC Desire HD costs MUCH money here compared to $400 in other countries. I don’t see such a big deal out of “ø” anyway.
