Google Maps updated to v4.6 – now with “real time” location tracking via Latitude

Google’s tweaked the social and location features of its Android Maps app, with version 4.6 now up on the Android Market. The most technically impressive new feature is “real time” updating of your location status via the Google Latitude layer, if you don’t mind that sort of intrusive tracking.

Here’s how that bit works:

In Latitude, you can also choose an experimental “Real-time updating” option from an individual Latitude friend’s profile page to help meet up with them by temporarily seeing faster location updates (friends must have Maps 4.6 and Android 2.2+).

As well as this, there’s more filtering for Places search results and a general redesign of the Places tab in general. Here are a couple of Google’s supplied images. They’re America-themed, but get the idea across.

Read the official line about it all over on the Google Mobile Blog, if you’re into all this social interaction nonsense.

  1. Places seems to be “America themed” even in England. The places app lists ATMs, not cash machines. Search for an ATM and it tells me about a car recovery firm, not somewhere to withdraw my money. I would uninstall places if I could.
