This is a bit of a shock. iPhone’s amazing cash cow Angry Birds has launched on Android today, with the full version of the amazingly popular physics game ready for download. For £NOTHING.
There’s one small catch – the game is only available through mobile gaming site GetJar at the moment, with the Android Market release set to come “later”. We have no idea how much “later” later means. Here it is:
Speaking on its Twitter page, Rovio said “ads are there because of state of Android market and beta feedback, will have ad free version a bit“.
We haven’t encountered any ads during our very brief play through the first few levels of the game yet, though – presumably they’ll be switched on once the critical “first impressions” period is over.
To get the game, go here, enter your phone details, then download the 12.3MB file through your phone’s web browser. A bit convoluted, but hey – free Angry Birds!
UPDATE:
Rovio has just confirmed the game will hit the Android Market “within 24 hours” so this is a very limited timed exclusive deal with GetJar.
UPDATE #2:
Here’s the announcement release:
Angry Birds available for Android
IT’S HERE. AND IT’S FREE. After an extended period of beta testing, Rovio is proud to present Angry Birds for the Android platform. First of all, we’d like to thank you for your patience.
Why is Angry Birds free on Android? We want to make Angry Birds available for as many people as possible. Previously, many people were experiencing problems in finding Angry Birds on Android Market, but now everybody can download the game on their device.
Angry Birds will run on second generation Android devices and upwards, with Android platform 1.6 or later. Your device needs to support OpenGL ES 2.0. QVGA display resolution is not supported currently, but we will add support for QVGA devices soon.
Angry Birds Android features mobile advertising. A future update will include the option to purchase and opt out of advertisements.
To get the game now, you can download Angry Birds on your device for free exclusively from GetJar (http://www.getjar.com/angry-birds). It will soon be available on the Android Market and Motorola SHOP4APPS, free of charge as well.
We have worked long and hard to ensure that Angry Birds gives the best possible experience on Android, and we believe we have reached our goal. We welcome our fans to see for themselves and have fun playing Angry Birds!

/ October 15, 2010It seem GetJar is struggling with the high demand for this game…

/ October 15, 2010Rovio told me directly HTC Hero would not be supported but GetJar listed it earlier?
I had it set to DL to SD card but my Hero hasn’t let me DL anything to SD Card lately.
Desire HD……soon as it’s out I’m starting to queue up like an iPhud addict!! :D

/ October 15, 2010Google must be laughing their ass off. GetJar totally Fooked up their Exclusivity.
The website is down more than it’s up. When it’s up, it’s offering me the 2 month old Beta2 APK of the file….
Leave it to the big boys GetJar….

/ October 15, 2010LOL, get GetJar have any credibility left now? They basically paid for exclusivity and destroyed their reputation.
I won’t be bothering to get my stuff from there in the future…
