You know that homemade Subway app we mentioned a few days ago? The maker of that has now turned his hand to creating a Tesco Clubcard app, meaning any UK shoppers who’re registered for Tesco’s point-saving scheme can use their phones to keep track of their loyalty card.
And you’re much more likely to have your phone on you in the supermarket than your Clubcard, right? Here’s how it works:
Enter your regular UK Clubcard number off your card and optionally your postcode. Your clubcard barcode will be displayed for Tesco staff to scan your phone and allow you to collect clubcard points. Current limitations with the Tesco tills mean that it doesn’t work on self service tills, baskets only tills or at Tesco Express.
If you have entered your postcode and your card is registered under that postcode (and not a temporary card) then it will also show your current points balance.

We can foresee the manager being called to the till the first time you try to get a checkout operative to point their scanner at your phone.

/ October 7, 2010I work at Tesco & have never successfully scanned one of these on the iphone or the Keyring rewards app you can already get on android.
I doubt this one will scan either, but it’s still kinda cool, so I will use it to annoy other staff!

/ October 8, 2010I’ve used Key Ring at Tesco without any problem – it’s a cool app that allows me to keep all of my loyalty cards in the one place – the only problem is those cards without bar codes as the till operator has to key the account number rather than swiping the magnetic strip.
Whilst I won’t be loading this particular Tesco app on my rooted Desire as space is very limited (even with Froyo APP2SD) and Key Ring does the job, I find it awesome that people like Stephen Cooper develop apps like this to enable functionality on the Android platform which some of the big corporates appear to be ignoring.

I agree with you that Tesco staff do seem to have trouble scanning these apps, sometimes the staff dont seem to want the bother of messing about getting it to scan.
However I have had this app scanning successfully in Tesco to get points but as mentioned it only works on normal tills.

/ October 8, 2010I don’t understand why the app would only work on normal tills? I’ve compared the generated barcode with the code on my Tesco key fob and it’s exactly the same, and I have no problems using the key fob on self checkout. Is it just a case that the scanner physically cannot read the barcode off the Android screen?

/ October 8, 2010Roger, try clearing the app data from the Android Settings > Applications page and loading up the app again.
Its possible that you had no internet connection when it was trying to receive the code, it only receives it once and then saves it for future App loads.
I will release an update later on to try and improve the barcode image quality and also add a refresh code button.

Side by side with the card number as the sample shown on the Clubcard app iTunes website ( http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/tesco-clubcard/id351841850?mt=8 ) the barcode is now identical in size and clarity.
So if Tesco staff cant scan properly it then they wouldn’t be able to scan the iPhone one either.
