T-Mobile’s put up a brief little holding page for the phone its calling the T-Mobile G2, confirming that the phone we’ll almost certainly end up calling the HTC Desire Z comes with an entirely new range of processor – which it’s calling Scorpion (this, we assume)**.
Initial reports of there being an 800Mhz processor inside the G2 are leading some to accuse the new HTC-made Android phone of being “slow” – but the chip is actually an entirely new thing with a new GPU. So should in fact be “faster”. Here’s T-Mobile’s description:

Scorpion is the codename for the CPU in the Snapdragon chipset. So that is a slower CPU than the N1 for example in clock speed.
It looks like that it does have differences if it is an MSM7230 based thing – it’ll be 45nm rather than 65nm so there should be power and heat savings (so more battery life). Also 802.11n support.
It’ll also be sporting a better GPU I think (Adreno 205 rather than 200) which apparently has 4x the performance and even hardware accelerated flash but that’s all from the internet…

/ September 2, 2010MSM7x30 is much faster SoC compared to the first implementation “Scorpion” microahitecture – QSD8x50 aka “Snapdragon”!
MSM7x30 has WAY faster GPU – Adreno 205, and additional onchip L2 memory!
25% lower frequency is really no issue, especially when you know that most of the time Snapdragon works at 768 MHz, and only in high load situations like benchmarks on 1 GHz!

Thanks to L2 cache, 800MHz MSM will be faster compared to updated Snapdragon – QSD8x50A at 1.3 GHz!!

/ September 2, 2010Interesting, I wonder when in 2011 the 220 will come out? If it’s around the first or second quarter I would wait to see if it’s coupled with Gingerbread. I reckon the 220 will come in around a year’s time or maybe 9 months at the earliest.
