High street chain Next stocking £180 10-inch Android tablet

Popular UK high street chain Next is currently stocking an own-brand Android tablet, which it’s calling the Next 10″ Tablet. Unsurprisingly, Next doesn’t go into details about the OS version or touchscreen technology.

It does at least tell you it packs a 10″ WXGA LCD screen, 8GB of onboard storage, two USB ports and wi-fi. Not bad for a £180 impulse buy while the wife’s trying on coats over in the ladieswear section.

It’s clearly a rebranded something or other – anyone care to ID the original manufacturer? Good to see Android on the high street, nonetheless. With thanks to reader Phil for the spot.

    Is it the ‘Zenithink ZT-180′?:

    http://www.zenithink.us/

Hard to tell from the Next website but it does look like it…

A few people seem to have gotten their hands on the ZT, various discussions on device quality, firmware and modding to be found on the usual Android forums.

  2. Definitely looks extremely similar, in particular with the ports, although Zenthink are probably just rebranding a no-name Chinese import. At this price, though, it’s going to be a resistive touch screen, which is likely to be a big bag of fail. Judging by the 7-inch import tablet sitting next to me, it’ll be much like tapping one of the original Palm Pilots – the touchscreen equivalent of a Spectrum rubber-key keyboard….

OTOH – £180 for a 10″ tablet is pretty nice for some usage that doesn’t require a huge amount of screen tapping. It does look like it only has a single button – power/volume on the top, but the big button on the bottom bezel is the one that will do the business and, if it’s like mine, it’ll be a combination of back and menu, and they’ll put soft buttons in the notification area. Which is annoying in Apps that hide the notification area….

I’m told it appears to be a rebranded elonex etouch. If it is, that’s a 1ghz processor, and Android 2.1

I’d also suggest waiting until after Xmas as Next sales are really good for large price cuts, and you could pick one up for nearer £100.

  4. Yes it’s the elonex etouch, aka aPad.

    Resistive screen I believe.

Pleeeeease refrain from stereotypes like “Not bad for a £180 impulse buy while the wife’s trying on coats over in the ladieswear section”! There are actually households where the man loves to buy coats & shoes while the woman is drooling over the newest gadgets in the tech department…
I admit that there still are more men then women who are interested in gadgets, but with “witty” remarks like the aforementioned you’re sure to scare away a lot of female readers.

Look luv, accept the fact that women are drawn to store and hunt through every rack of clothes to then not buy anything. But we don’t mind, we understand you need a break from the cooking, washing and ironing.

Wow. Good to see you know when somebody is having a bit of a joke. Or maybe you are a woman with a major chip on your shoulder.

        Q. What do you say to a woman with two black eyes?
        A. Nothing, you’ve told her twice

Oh, I can see that causing some range.

Grow up and realise that sometimes things are just meant as a bit of a laugh, not seriously.
