Sony Ericsson's LiveView – a mini OLED Android phone remote

This is quite the odd little product. Sony Ericsson’s LiveView is basically a touchscreen remote control for your phone, which you can clip onto your clothing or pop into a little wrist-mounted holder and wear the thing like a watch.

It’s a 1.3″ OLED screen, with two physical buttons, capable of acting as a simple RSS reader, calendar and incoming call screener, connecting to your phone via Bluetooth. It’s as cute as a button. And the size of a button.

There’s a nice man called Marcus Hansson explaining all in a video after the page break, along with two rather nice “lifestyle” photographs of it being used…

Read more about it here. Sony Ericsson says it’s compatible with “most” Android devices using version 2.X of the OS and above, but the current compatibility page only mentions the X10 family right now.

And that’s what you do with it.

Wow, this is thinking outside the box for android :D
    awesome

  2. That’s … actually pretty neat. Depending on how far, exactly, you can take it it’s really, really neat.

If you can use it to make and take calls, for instance, then you could have a tablet rather than a phone as your only device and leave it in your bag or coat when using it as a phone.

    Don’t the X10′s run on 1.6?

Hmm, that’s a bit odd. I guess it’s coded something up special to ensure it works on SE’s own handsets, even though they’re not on 2.X.

It’d be rather embarrassing to release an Android accessory that doesn’t work on its own phones, after all.

Or! Maybe because it’s launching in Q4, it’s assuming the X10s will have been upgraded to 2.1 by then?

Given the phone operators delays in sending out HTC updates (while they add pointless branding) whats the bet this product is released wayyyyy before any SE phones in the UK get 2.2 (or even 2.1)

If you click ‘other brands’ on the phone compatability page it lists the following:

    Samsung Galaxy S
    HTC Desire

So can you attach headphones to it?

I think you attach your headphones to your proper phone, then use this as a remote control for it. I think.

Or you wirelessly connect your bluetooth headphones to the phone/tablet and use this as a more visual control method (other than the pause/play, forward/back you’d get on bluetooth or a wired controller) say choosing from a bunch of playlists or a different audio app.

Yes, this is really neat. But if it doesn’t have a vibrating alert for e.g. incoming calls, sms:s etc, then it loses too much of the functionality already present in the mbw-150 and mbw-200 range of SE bt watches.
