Vodafone’s doing a rather good job of keeping its angry Desire users notified of the timescale of the “Froyo” update for its HTC Desire these days, with little comment issued early this morning telling everyone it’ll be out in “days, not weeks”.
The Android 2.2 update for the network’s (very) branded HTC Desire is currently in the final stages of approval, with Google & HTC currently giving it the once over ahead of distribution to you lot. Here’s Vodafone’s message on the matter:
We’re still developing and testing the Android 2.2 update for HTC Desire and working on its approval with Google and HTC. The start of the roll out is days, not weeks, away and as soon as the date is finalised we’ll let you know.
It’s an absolute priority for Vodafone customers to receive this update as soon as possible and that it works as we promised it would do. The testing process has taken a little longer than we initially anticipated, but we’re working hard to make sure it gives customers the best experience.
Days, not weeks. Not weeks implies a singular week, which is seven days. But we’re sure it’ll actually be ready when it’s ready and when everyone rubber stamps it. Might be this afternoon. Might be next Tuesday at 9:45am. WE JUST CAN’T KNOW.
The fish appears resigned to having to wait until the weekend.
HTC’s 4.3″ dual-core Android model, powered by Qualcomm’s all-new S4 processor. It’s smaller than the enormous One X, but is it as nice as its bigger brother? (SPOILER: Yes it is).
HTC is very much B-A-C-K at the top of the Android world with this, its quad-core flagship for 2012. Great camera, huge 4.7″ display and Android 4.0 running beautifully well.
Sony returns with an all-new mobile design for 2012, pairing a dual-core processor with a 720p display. It’s a lovely phone, but is it enough to end our Samsung and HTC obsession?
LG’s updated Prada phone comes with an absolutely crazy black & white theme, but is it just for fashionable suit wearers who want to make themselves look a bit more interesting?

Did you buy a) from an independent outlet (ie carphone warehouse) on a vodafone contract or b) VERY close to release date?
A – The phones are unbranded and are not locked to a network
B – Vodafone were using unbranded desires for a short while.

Still, very weird to me that my contract is with vodafone, but the update comes to me before vf direct customers.
Maybe we are guinea pigs!
Joking aside, I’ve never seen a vf desire running, so I don’t really know what the branding is – but yes, I seem to have no vf icons, bookmarks, apps, whatever – not even a sticker.

When 2.2 comes out, can I just download and install from the HTC site? I don’t have to go through my carrier, do I? I don’t understand how Vodafone, another carrier, is involved at all.
