The OS update for its branded HTC Desire that Vodafone released yesterday has been explained a little better by the company today, which has clarified what’s contained in the release – and stressed that “FroYo” is still on the way. The update was released to give Vodafone customers “the choice” to use the 360 Vodafone software if they want to. Which is… nice. Isn’t that nice? Here’s the statement:
Yesterday, 3rd August, Vodafone released a pre-planned Android 2.1 update to our Desire customers. This was originally scheduled for release a couple of weeks ago but was delayed to technical reasons. We are still working on the Android 2.2 update with HTC and Google and are planning to release this as soon as possible. Yesterday’s Android 2.1 update gives customers access to Vodafone 360 products and services, which brings the experience on the Desire in line with other devices supplied by Vodafone. This means that customers have the choice to use 360 services as they wish to. It is not currently possible for the customisations to be uninstalled from the device.
Vodafone’s also opened up a specific feedback thread, if you’re having problems with the upgrade since it barged its way onto your Desire.
Oh, and in a separate development, look at this – the Desire’s still suffering from “limited stock” issues through Vodafone’s online store. All the noise about FroYo must be having quite an effect on sales.

It should. 2.1 -> 2.2 was like Vista to Windows 7.
I think I’ve just bored myself with my own comment.

/ August 7, 2010Weird. I did an OTA update last week with Vodafone: it gave me froyo 2.2, and no branding! Does it make any difference if you use WiFi? 2.2 works a treat.

/ August 7, 2010It’s all a bit bonkers. If you have an unbranded Desire on Vodafone you’ll get the 2.2 update, but if you have a branded phone you’ll be the spammy 2.1 “enhancement”, complete with sexy bookmarks and everything.
