UPDATE: HTC Desire FroYo Android 2.2 update underway NOW

The Android 2.2 FroYo update for unlocked Desires is happening right now. It’s happening right now. It is HAPPENING, and RIGHT NOW. HTC said FroYo would hit this weekend, and if we’re not very much mistaken, Sunday afternoon is indeed an official part of the weekend.

Here’s a video we’ve just taken from YouTube, in which a user is demonstrating the Desire’s new 720p video recording capabilities. It’s all very, very exciting.

Happy days. There’s a quite authoritative thread on the XDA Forums at the moment, in which they’re discussing the new additions to the Desire brought via this update. Promises were kept. Well done, HTC. We never doubted you…

To celebrate this momentous day, we shall update our HTC Desire stock photograph. Now, about the versions of FroYo for the locked operator handsets…

I am slightly erect at this news. Downloading now for HTC Desire. Had to manually check for update for it to work, though no doubt it would have automatically popped up eventually.

Update: You need at least 25mb free on phone memory to install. I had 17MB free so it downloaded, restarted but failed the upgrade. Just so you know.

haha I had the same thing…. there must be a way to install the apps on the 8gb micro sd i have to free up the constant warning messages each time i have to have a new app. The update installed smartly and i now have a mobile wifi hotspot… get in!

I got Android for my HTC Desire version 2.2 Monday 2th August. It recommended download over WiFi and I recommend also to have power cable (USB) cable connected to ensure power thourgh the whole upgrade proces. It took me about 20-25 min. to upgrade without any upgrade problems, and my programs and settings was intacts (and additional programs I used also worked after upgrading).

Until now only issue is using Android phone from a PC to access Internet. The connection is not stable (which was no problem using Android 2.1). However I switched to the new Android Wi-Fi-hotspot, and works fine (and fast).

I’m having a nightmare! I bought an O2 branded version on ebay and I installed a debranded RUU ROM (non rooted) to remove the O2 branding from my Desire… I did this so it would be first in line to get the 2.2 update from HTC over the air…

Well it arrived today and I downloaded it and installed the 2.2 update and now my phone is completely screwed. On boot is sort of loads up and it shows it’s running 2.2 in settings and has the new options like wifi hotspot. But it keeps rebooting on its own, then freezing and saying “process system is not responding, wait or Force Close?” and also the wifi is broken cannot turn on just says error… and also the notification tray doesn’t work/roll down and the menu bar doesn’t show i’m connected to a network. I can’t make calls but bizarrely I CAN browse the web so it is connecting to the vodafone 3g network.

I’m at a complete loss and trying to roll it back to the ROM i had previously installed isn’t working as I get an error message..

If you have any ideas or know of how to fix this in any way so I have a useable phone you would be a godsend. I am on Vodafone but I can’t take it into Vodafone as they didn’t sell me the Desire on contract – I sold the Legend they have me as an upgrade as I didn’t like it and bought this Desire on ebay…. I’m screwed aren’t I?

    • Gary C

       /  August 1, 2010

It ought to be salvageable. I can’t help as I’m a ROM amateur, but if you go to the Vodafone forum there are some very knowledgeable and helpful users on there who are happy to talk people through rooting/flashing problems.

    • Anonymous

       /  August 1, 2010

I got the same issue. I think you need to have a goldcard in the phone when you are doing the update if you flashed it before with a generic ROM.

I tried the update the first time without the gold card and had the same issue. constant loop and crash. I had to turn the phone to airplane mode and press menu to make it stop. I reflashed with the generic 2.1 ROM and tried the update again with the goldcard this time and it worked! no issues anymore…

Sorry, are you saying that you can go into an Orange Store and pay £20 for them to unlock it? Really?!? I’m tempted if this is true…

Otherwise, anyone know when Orange Desires are likely to get 2.2, or is this a “piece of string” question?

             /  August 1, 2010

yes i spoke to them today on 150 and they said it would be 20 to unlock it but that i should just download the update from android.com, i found that route too confussing so im in the process of debranding

    HI Android 2.2 anthusiasts !
I have got desire from vodafone contract in the UK. Recently I found that it is unlocked ( tried with an orange sim, and it works).
Also yesterday, I have rooted the phone.
I am STILL waiting for the new 2.2 update. Have been manually checking System updates, but no joy.
Anyone here is in the UK, and on vodafone contract got the update ?

Much appreciated for your replies !!!

I have a Virgin Mobile Desire, it has the Virgin Logo on the startup screen but any network sim form any network works in the phone.

I have tried the Check now for system software updates but it is saying my phone is up to-date. Firmware version is 2.1-update1.

how do I get to 2.2?

    • DTG

       /  August 1, 2010

I think you’re firmware will be slightly modified to incorporate the virgin branding. I’ll go out on a limb and say that’s probably not the only virgin bloatware on the device? You’ll probably have to wait until virgin meddle with you’re update. Hope I’m wrong though.

  18. Finished updating my phone (HTC Desire) to Froyo. My phone is locked in Orange Romania, but I received the update and everything works without any problem (I made one slight change, I installed “LocaleSwitch” application and set up my phone to en_US)

  21. shan

     /  August 1, 2010

checked again – still no updates.
    My current software information:
    Firmware: 2.1-update1
    Baseband version:32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
    software no:1.19.161.5

not sure what all the above means, but please if the vodafone guy above(DTG) can confirm if this is the same on your phone.

    THANKS,

    • Was on Vodafone’s 1.15.xxx.xx ROM (thanks to them sending me what I suspect is a refurb’d phone). Rooted phone and put stock HTC 1.21.405.2/Radio_32.xxx ROM on.
Checked for OTA update manually and voila, there she was.
OTA update was flawless. and thus now am on Froyo with Sense UI. etc.
Whole process (from Goldcard creation thru completion) took about 2 hours.
Disappointingly, my HBOOT looks to have gone from 0.75.blah to 0.92.blah.
Will prevent me from rooting now?
Was that the cost of trusting HTC with an OTA update?

      • Oh yeah Shan. I was labouring to make the point that your 1.19.xxx ROM is a Vodafone specific ROM, NOT stock, therefore the update check will not show an available upgrade until such time as VF pull their little fingers out and release their “customised” version of the new Froyo ROM.
If you can’t wait (as I couldn’t) then do as I did above.
        Best of luck.

      • mintvilla

         /  August 1, 2010

yes you have now lost root, and unless is rehacked, will be unable to root your phone again, strange though if you know about rooting and had a rooted phone, why didnt you install a custom rom from the xda which gives you this update along with old apps2sd and not changing your Hboot.?

        Nigel,

Correct me if I’m wrong but what you’re saying is:

I currently have the T-Mobile Software version 1.15.110.11. If I do the goldcard thing and root it back to 1.21, I’ll then be able to search for the OTA update and I’ll have froyo? As easy as that?

  27. Crosbie

     /  August 1, 2010

Im so fucing pissed off. I bought my desire from vodafone as an upgrade from their website. It is unbranded, start up screen has no vodafone logo and their is nothing that would suggest it even came from vodafone on it. Ive tried other sim cards from orange t-mobile and o2 in it and it works perfectly and it starts fine with no sim card in it either. Ive been on the vodafone website to see if it is unlocked and they do it for free but ask you to check if it is already unlocked by checking it can be used with other sim cards which it can. So if it is unlocked then why the hell when i search for updates does it tell me that there are none available for my phone? Is there any other way i can download froyo without porting it? i want it done properly and im so annoyed at why i havent got it yet if my phone is unlocked.

    • Crosbie. See my answer to Shan above.
It is a question of terminology. What is meant by unbranded these days?
I would bet my house that you have a Vodafone ROM. EXTREMELY unlikely you will have received a device from Vodafone with standard HTC ROM only.
Check the number in the Settings/About Phone/Software area and if you see 1.19.161.5 9 (or older 1.15.161.4) then forget about the update for now. Vodafone probably won’t have it ready for a while yet.

      • Crosbie

         /  August 1, 2010

Thanks for your quick reply Nigel. Anything i have read just says unlocked so i assumed that since it is not locked to vodafone and never was then i would get it. My blood is boiling at the thought of waiting for vodafones bullshit update to come. It would be impossible for me to care any less about anything limp wristed that they are doing to it. Can someone point me to a website that explains how i can install the original HTC software onto my phone? Thanks again Nigel, at least i know theres a reason for this.

  28. joe

     /  August 1, 2010

Hey Crosbie – exactly the same hurt over here. Im on Vodafone Germany and have the same problems. Also have that 1.19.xx Rom version that has been argued to be an affected one. Why?? Its not simlocked and HTC branded at startup… just don’t get it…

  29. Art

     /  August 1, 2010

Already unlocked when I got the phone. I didn’t realize until the 3 operator told me they shipped unlocked Desire. Save me the hassle :) By the way, updated to 2.2 without any issue.

  30. mintvilla

     /  August 1, 2010

i think theres some very confused people on this website, firstly there is a differnce to unbranded and unlocked, if you have a phone from o2 or orange or tmobile, even if its unlocked, still means you have to wait for them to give you them their versions, i belive the build number is 1.19 means that you dont have an unbranded version, means that you got your phone from a network, even if they havnt sim locked it, and even if they havnt put any bloatware on the phone, now if your build number is 1.15 or 1.21 then that means your phone has come direct from htc and is unbranded, the update is therefore for you. if you are rooted though and you update to this update, it will change your Hboot to 0.92 and you will lose root and will be unable to reroot, to anyone else if they want to root, and flash a generic rom from htc, they will then be able to get this update but again you will lose root, if youve gone to the effort of rooting you mise well load a custom rom, which is based off this update except they add more things, thus making the rom even better (old apps2sd for example) for that head over to the xda website and find the htc desire forums, i have been running froyo now for past 6 weeks, and have just upgraded to my rom to one based off this update.

also to the people asking about i tunes sync, this is done via htc sync on your pc, its a new version of htc sync so check the htc website, i dont use itunes so i havent checked if its available yet as i couldnt care less about itunes lol.

hi all.. Congrats to all of you who have been able to update to 2.2… i’m realy envious of you all. if you on 3 and still waiting for the update then…. i don’t know what to say. 2.2 looks and now sounds so much better then 2.1. i hope 3 pull there finger out soon and allow us to have the update some time this year. i’ve been calling them and asking for so long, but i get the same old drosh. i’m not to clever with the rooting/unrooting thing with the phones so i would’nt want to try that, and after reading one or two post of people who’s phone have gone “up the wall”, i don’t think it would be worth the hastle. Take care all. ibs from Leicester…

Go to your settings, mobile network and then under APN menu, click on 3 (you should be able to see green light), and your net through mobile will start. I had similar problem, looks like while upgrading it disables the current APN.

     /  August 2, 2010

    HI All,
I am on vodafone network, but still no joy. have been manually checking since yesterday.
The problem is if you bought the phone straight from the network provider(in my case it is vodafone), and even tho the phone is unlocked(as I can use any sim with it) – still the new update will not come thru as it has got the Software Version as 1.19 . This is specific to vodafone, and only up to their mercy when we can get the update. But if you bought the phone from indirect sources like Carphonewarehouse, these phones have got the HTC version software and you will get the update.

  43. TurboHobbit

     /  August 2, 2010

Just to go a stage further, I’ve got a branded Orange Desire with the following:

    Firmware: 2.1-update1
    Build number: 1.15.61.10 CL155070 release-keys
    Software number: 1.15.61.10

Now I know this is locked down Desire, but two questions:

    1) Will I automatically (eventually) get FroYo as an OTA update (manually searched for or otherwise…) or will I have to update something first? It’s been suggested on another forum that I may have to…

    2) If I have to update something first (software to 1.21?) how the heck do I do that?!?

    Thanks in advance!

    • shan

       /  August 2, 2010

I think you should get it… try manual update.. you version seems ok…

      • Chris Smith

         /  August 3, 2010

No it doesnt seem ok lol, your branded and will have to wait for your network to provide a branded version.

  44. Chris

     /  August 3, 2010

@TurboHobbit no your firmware is branded as you seem to already know, once the network has finished branding the htc firmware then you should get an OTA update, otherwise you will need to debrand to a firmware that says 405 where yours says 61 and you should get the OTA FroYo update straight away.

    Hope this helps!

          Hi Hans

you will get the update when HTC release the update for devices belongs to ASIA 1.19.707.7 indicates in most cases the device belongs to ASIA
so……you will have to wait but don’t lose hope it will happen soon

    Hi,
I bought an HTC desire online which arrived as an unbranded handset. I can run any SIM from any network no problem (currently have a Virgin/T-Mobile SIM). My S/W versions indicate I should be able to get the stock ROM update but nothing so far..

    Firmware version : 2.1-update1
    Kernel: 2.6.29-0cb9f166
    htc-kernel@18-2#1
    Build: 1.21.405.2 CL174215 release keys
    Software number: 1.21.405.2
    Browser version: Webkit 3.1

so this is the stock HTC rom yes?

I assume you only get the OTA update (stock or provider version) once the network operator puts it up and not sooner… assume this is why i have not seen it yet…

would i be able to get it if i put an orange sim into the handset (as per other orange users?)

    yours confused.

I’m on Vodafone UK contract and got the update by doing the following:
HTC sync was installed on windows 7. I made sure usb debugging was set on desire by going into settings>applications>development> and ticked usb debugging.

I then followed instructions on: androidforums.com/HTC-desire/67098-how-flash-debrand-your-desire.html

Followed part 1. How to set up adb/usb drivers (just followed part one by downloading android sdk and used command prompt instructions etc, so followed points 1-6). I had this running when I flashed my phone.

I created a goldcard as per instructions in part 2 in debrand guide on android forum. I used the 4gb mini SD that came with my phone.

    I then went to: HTCpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2907
And downloaded flash program: RUU Bravo HTC WWE 1.21.405.2 radio 32.36.00.28U 4.06.00.02 2 release 126984.

So with my goldcard mini SD in my phone, my desire connected to my pc in DISK DRIVE MODE with usb debugging, and having used the adb instruction until my phones serial was showing in the command prompt, I then ran the RUU file I downloaded. The first time you run this it fails to install to your phone but run it a SECOND TIME and it will successfully flash your phone to eclair 2.1.

Once 2.1 has fully installed on your phone just skip through the phone set up then swiag off phone. With your goldcard still in your phone, do a manual search for system update if the phone hasn’t already notified you that an update is available. Then update to froyo 2.2 official firmware. If you phone says it can’t find your SD card just switch on. This version of 2.2 is generic and for the whole of Europe so you will need to remove the other countries from the kexboard settings, in settings. I also chose the Vodafone post pay option when the phone asked me. If anything goes wrong just re flash to 2.1 and try again. My phone is working fine with all functions. I typed these instructions on them. I apologise if they are not clear but the websites I listed have all the instructions. I just found it was not necessary to root my phone so I was able simplyfy the process. I suppose there is a slight risk of bricking but I couldn’t wait for Vodafone!

    Hi all,

Looking for some suggestions and to see if anyone has the same problems as i have?
    Desire from Three – Unlocked
Running stock 2.1 until 2.2 became available on Sunday.
Selected the update, and got the same “requires 25Mb free” message, so uninstalled a few apps and continued.
Ran through the update again with no apparent issues.
Compared versions with earlier posts in this thread after the upgrade, and all versions match.

It looks like a number of expected froyo features are missing -
Camera looks exactly as it did in 2.1
Home screen also exactly as in 2.1
No data connection (now fixed thanks to earlier posts)
Enabling Tethering (PWHS) appears to disable any data connection

Any advice appreciated. If i find solutions to any of these myself, i’ll update the post.

    Cheers.

    • Hi JB,

I too have THE problem with failing data connection after tethering.

G’ah. I’ve got an unlocked O2 from Carphone Warehouse – and this is killing me. *Please help cos I’m clearly dumb*

After a minor delay (not having enough battery – despite being mained in) I downloaded package this morning through Desire auto update – hooray! Like Charlie and his Golden Ticket I eagerly started…

First problem – not enough memory so freed some space by deleting non-essential apps and files as suggested.
Second problem – Task Killer killed notification bar content so couldn’t find package. Re-downloaded.
Third problem – two 90MB d/ls on SD card. Deleted one. Couldn’t start update from remaining d/l.
Fourth problem – after complete failure and huge frustration have deleted all update files hoping to try again, only to find auto update now no longer saying updates are available.

At least in stuck in work for 8.5 hours – could be worse!

I have a sim-free desire and use 3 network. I manually updated it to 2.2 yesterday. But after the update, I found I have no 3 network internet signal anymore. But it works fine under wi-fi environment. Can anyone tell me is it the problem caused by the update? and what can I do?

    THANKS!!

      Hey Oliver,

Had the same problem – Found the answer in a post by “Rob” in this thread -

      Quote as below
      “Menu – Settings – Wireless & Networks – Mobile Networks – Access Point Names – Select ’3′”

Also worth advising if anyone had the flashlight app installed on 2.1, there are post recommending that you uninstall it, otherwise you end up with an old camemra version like i have. Still no solution for me yet, but working on it.

I know it is really frustrating but before you go rooting your device etc you might want to wait a few more days. Here is the official response from HTC that i got from them via their email support.
“Dear Steve, Thank you for your email. In regards to the 2.2 upgrade for Desire, it will come as a system message over the air. You might have to wait for the message to come automatically as you can’t force it. The update is rolled out in phases and not everyone gets it at the same time. If your device did not get added to the list on this phase, you might need to wait a couple of days for the next phase to begin. Kind Regards, HTC Support Team”
i have a totally unlocked/unbranded desire from play.com and i’m still getting the ‘no updates available’ when checking manually for a system update. i think it is worth waiting a few more days before doing anything too rash. but yeah total pain in the ass as patience is not a virtue i have much of either.

I have an unlocked, unbranded Desire on 3 and am getting message “Your phone is up to date” when I try a manual check.

From what I can see from posts above looking at the details on the software screen my phone is definitely unbranded and I know it is not locked.

    Firmware version : 2.1-update1

I was lucky to get the htc desire when it first came out in the uk, and it is unbranded and unlocked (my startup screen comes up with a htc logo, even though im on orange). The intial desires were all unbranded and unlocked (across most of the operators – was told this by the folks at carphonewarehouse) I presume this was because they were trying to push them out as fast as the telecom operators could as demand was so high. The later phones were locked and branded by the individual operators.

My unlocked desire is at 2.1 update 1 and I have been trying over the last few days with a manual check for 2.2 but to no avail. I guess they might be releasing them in batches, who knows?

    Hi guys,

Need help!! I updated to 2.2 without the goldcard. Now I have created the goldcard and tried the recommended zip file as update.zip but it failed. I believe the file I downloaded originally should have worked but I have already deleated it. My version is

    Android version: 2.2
    Baseband version: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
    Kernel version: 2.6.32-15-gd96f2c0 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
    Build number: 2.13.707.1 CL233262 release-keys
    Software number: 2.13.707.1
    Browser version: WebKit 3.1

Can anyone help me with the procedure after creating gold card. I also need the zip file which is to be renamed as update.zip

    Thank You!!

Samsung are very slow on the 2.2 update to the Samsung Galaxy S if at all for some markets. With the broken GPS, I would suggest people get HTC phone os similar brand who have a reasonable history with updates.
