Some pretty astonishing UK smartphone sales data has just been released by GfK , and it shows us how far Android has come during 2010. Android’s market share has grown from 3% of the contract phone market in Q1 to 13% in Q2, a quite astonishing 350% leap in the space of a few months.
Here’s the full GfK analysis:
Android Phones go from Strength to Strength in UK Contract Market
Android’s share of the UK mobile contract market has grown from 3% in Q1 2010 to reach 13.2% in Q2 2010, GfK Retail and Technology’s latest figures have revealed. During this period, while contract market sales grew by less than 1%, sales of Android phones increased by a staggering 350%.
Phones with an advanced Operating System* (OS) continue to grow in the contract market, reaching 66.7% in Q2 2010 compared to 55% in Q1 2010. Growth has been continuous since 2010 began and is expected to rise consistently throughout the rest of the year; GfK’s latest monthly data shows that in June, phones with advanced OS represented 73.5% of the contract market.
“The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name,” commented GfK analyst Megan Baldock. “Operating Systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right.”

/ July 26, 2010The nexus one introduced me to android so i have a fond place in my heart for it and while i still think the iphone os is better for now i can only see android taking over in the future. Think windows vs mac, but with phones not computers.
But with the android inventor coming out we might get some innovative ideas by opening up app development to the masses which will keep my nexus one in demand for the near future. I just hope that the android market place won’t just fill up with bedroom programmers, to be fair we might get some innovative ideas opening it up to the masses like this but only as long as they manage it appropriately.
There are even competitions now for people to submit their ideas apps as new business ideas (http://www.ukesnc.com).

/ July 26, 2010Looking into the numbers it appears Android is now on 20% of all contract phones in the UK which run advanced operating systems (I’m guessing this means smartphones). Shame there isn’t an equivalent values for RIM, iOS, Symbian etc in this press release!
