This is an Android app for people who need to know where there’s some good wind. People like “kitesurfers, windsurfers, surfers, sailors and paragliders” which we’d suggest is quite a small demographic, considering they also need to be Android-owning kitesurfers, windsurfers, surfers, sailors and paragliders in order to download this.
Here’s the app’s description:
Wind, waves & weather worldwide for kitesurfers, windsurfers, surfers, sailors and paragliders
* forecasts for 15000+ spots
* observations from 4000+ weather stations
* configurable favorites, measuring unitsWindfinder is free, with ads. Windfinder Pro is not free, without ads, with Superforecast (hourly time steps).
And some pics that JUST BLEW IN:
Pretty tight niche, yes? Who’s likely to own an Android phone and be in the vicinity of the Cape of Good Hope while in possession of a piece of extreme sports equipment that depends on high wind velocities for its operation? Three people, maximum, we’d say.

/ July 16, 2010Ehhhhh, niche app?? Do you ever leave your house? You clearly have no idea how many people in the world are wind sport enthusiasts. A quick google search should show you that for example in 2004, there were estimated 20 million windsurfers worldwide, and in 2006 there were estimated 200,000 kitesurfers worldwide. This number probably has at least tripled by now. Let’s not forget the millions of sail boats…, and there are so many more examples…
This app is great since its the first android app from the big wind websites.

/ July 18, 2010I’ve been using windfinder while sailing in the baltic sea this summer. Great app and I’m a bit surprised that there are no similar apps that would come even close. Perhaps it’s niche but at least it’s got significant substance, as opposed to the vast majority of the free android apps (some of which I’d rather prefer to call spam)…

/ July 18, 2010I use xcweather for kite surfing/boarding in Scotland.

/ July 18, 2010Man, did I ever underestimate the Android/windsports demographic crossover. Three more comments from users and I’ll have to issue a full apology in front of the world’s media :(

/ July 19, 2010It is a a niche app, but you should maybe just check some of your facts on Cape of Good Hope.
I happen to know about 5 kitesurfers living within 50km of the Cape of Good Hope. And no I’m not one. There are beaches around there that are covered with kite and wind surfers. http://www.blouberg.co.za/kite-surfing-blouberg/ That’s about 30min by car from the Cape.
I’d use the app to find beaches that don’t have wind, because more often than not the Cape has way way too much wind.
