T-Mobile has spoken on the Android 2.1 update for the G2 Touch, which is the network’s name for the HTC Hero. It’s coming soon. It’s coming in “mid-July” according to a rather detailed explanatory piece on the company’s support forums.
Here’s the full thing. We’ve bolded the important bit to save you time:
For the 1st update, as some of you know we recently released a maintenance update for the G2 Touch which some people had problems installing. We stopped the update while we looked into these issues but the rollout will continue again over the course of the next few days. Your phone should prompt you to install the maintenance update, but if it doesn’t, don’t worry – you’ll get prompted the next time your phone checks for updates.
If you experience any problems installing the update please download and install the current G2 Touch software which you can find on HTC’s support website. Full instructions for installing the update can be found on HTC’s website . Please note, installing this software will wipe your handset, so please ensure you back up any data you need prior to installing. You only need to install the software from HTC’s website if you encounter problems installing the initial maintenance update. Once you have installed the software from HTC’s website you will be prompted to install the maintenance update the next time your phone checks for updates.
Once you’ve updated your phone with the maintenance update, you’ll be ready to get the 2nd update. We expect this to rollout in mid-July and this will update your phone to Android 2.1 – Éclair. Again, before you install this update you should make sure you have all your personal data backed up.
As you may remember T-Mobile had to pull the first attempt at a release after users discovered problems getting it to install. Which delayed things.
But all will soon be well for G2 Touch owners. Thanks to those of you who emailed this in and indeed even posted it in our very own comments. Your vigilance will one day be rewarded.
May your firmware always be the latest version. That’s an old Vulcan proverb.

/ July 1, 2010I’m on T-Mob UK. Just did the date trick and it prompted me with an update. Just installed it worked fine, I’m now on build 2.73.110.91
Can’t wait for the 2.1, hopefully in less than mid July.
Also, in the phone status, there’s a check for update option now.
P.S. I had also re-installed the rom from the HTC site earlier.

/ July 1, 2010The (first part of the) update is once again out, but to get it to work properly I had to reflash my phone with the base software from HTC’s support site. The firmware was the exact same version I was already using. Understand this, I do not.

/ July 5, 2010I too had to flash the old November T-mobile ROM in order for the update to work as the previous ROM kept getting the “yellow triangle”. I’ve now got the preparatory update (with just a few Google maps enhancements as far as I can tell….I want the full update!!!!
