We’re getting quite a few emails regarding an official UK roll-out of Part Two of the HTC Hero Android 2.1 update. Nothing official is showing on the HTC UK Support site as of yet, but users are telling us their phones are prompting them to download the second part of the 2.1 release.
It’s here.
Now might be a good time to manually check for a system update, or try whacking your phone’s clock forward a few weeks to trigger an automatic check. Let us know how you get on…
And remember, this update will WIPE your Hero – so do ensure you backup anything critical in the mad rush to upgrade.
UPDATE:
According to an updated Hero user over on the Android Forums, the “wipe” isn’t as bad as thought or stated by HTC – his messages, contacts and bookmarks survived the 2.1 upgrade process intact.

/ June 29, 2010Thanks spacecadet. Looking forward to this when T-Mobile push it through to the G2.
And for G2 owners T-Mobile pulled the first update because it caused some bricked phones. Here’s the thread from their support forums.

It was a result of the first update. I’m not sure but if anyone’s willing to try they can flash the ROM on the HTC Europe site, might cause bricking though.

/ June 29, 2010I’m on Orange UK but handset from Carphone Warehouse, so unbranded. All updated and working on 2.1 now. Navigation works fine and I have voice-to-text google searching after installing that ap, but *no* sign of voice-to-text microphone on the regular software keyboard. So where is that?

/ June 29, 2010Well I’ll count myself lucky because I did the time trick, got the update and didn’t get bricked. Now just have to wait for the 2.1 full update.
I’ve seen on another site that T-Mobile (and Orange) have to release it within the next two days. They signed an agreement with HTC regarding this. So hopefully not too long now. Although I am concerned their servers will get overwhelmed, which leads me to believe that some users might get it a bit later than in the next two days.

/ June 29, 2010Stupid question but how do you use the manual update firmware (just in case i ever need to use)
I assume you install via htc sync but then what?

/ June 29, 2010@ Stephen
I think you download the ROM from the HTC site. You’ll also need to install HTC Sync and then just follow the wizard in the ROM program with your phone connected via USB. I’ve never done it myself though.

/ June 29, 2010I’m just a bit confused as i applied the FOTA 2.1 firmware and i had an icon for Nav (even though i cant use it as i’m in czech)
Then i did a factory reset cos i wanted to clean tihngs up a bit and it’s gone.
I’m guessing maybe it depends on the sim or something? It’s a uk phone in czech on a czech o2 tariff
weird!!

/ June 29, 2010Couple of notes:
-Using an unbranded Hero, and I was able to download the 2.1 update via Orange at around 11pm last night. I didn’t have to do the time trick at all, I simply just used the search for updates feature in the settings.
-I can confirm that 2.1 uses ~20mb more RAM than 1.6 did. This is likely due to the new applications/widgets and the background data streaming that several of them require.

/ August 1, 2010On Orange UK: yesterday the hero decided by itself to reset the firmware… all contacts, all messages, all settings lost!! Incredible. Now I’m with an erased phone and still on android 1.5. Can I at least manually downoad the ducking update? Orange and HTC should be punished.
