After a limited period of exclusivity in the UK through phone specialists O2 and Carphone Warehouse, Dell has now started selling the Dell Streak 5″ Android tablet direct to customers through its own web site.
Dell is only selling the Streak unlocked and without a SIM card or calling plan, for a rather lofty £449 – in return for the 16GB version of the impossible-to-categorise new Android device we still can’t quite get our heads around.
Is it a phone? Is it a tablet? Is it something NEW AND FRIGHTENING we are simply not ready for? And more importantly, is it worth £449 for something with only a 5″ screen in this day and age?

/ June 28, 2010Have you ever made the effort to go to the Carphone Warehouse amd play with a live unit? Well, I have, and the thing is AMAZING. It feels like it just belongs in my hand. Web browsing and looking at pictures is out of this world on the 5 inch screen. And the thing is so thin! At 9.9mm it is thinner than the iPhone 3GS (12mm) or Nexus One (11.5mm) and only slightly thicker than the iPhone 4 (9.3mm). The thing is really fast, too. And I just don’t understand why people think it is too big to talk on. Yes, for people who mainly use their phone for talking it is too big. But to those people I say, get a Nokia featurephone for £30.
I am really sick of hearing the whole “is is a tablet or is it a phone” thin. It is the best of both worlds. Live with it. And, most of all, before writing such drivel, check one out yourself and get an informed opinion on it, will you?
