Motorola DROID X previewed – enormous 4.4" screen with Android 2.1

Engadget has landed itself an almighty exclusive today, getting the first hands-on play and photography session with Motorola’s much-leaked upcoming DROID X Android phone.

Featuring an utterly vast 4.4″ screen, the new, bigger, streamlined DROID runs Android 2.1 with MOTOBLUR on top, has an 8megapixel camera capable of recording 720p HD video, a 1GHz processor and is pre-loaded with alternate keyboard Swype. And much more.

It’s also rather… big. A monster, you might say:

To be honest, that looks ridiculously big, especially in the hand of Engadget’s lady blogger. We’re starting to think that this endless pursuit of bigger and bigger smartphone screens is a complete waste of time – it makes them less portable and more power-hungry, the two most mission-critical features of any good mobile phone.

It’s no good having the largest screen in its class if the battery claps out the one time you actually need to ring someone, is it?

I must disagree with your assessment of big screens! I had a play with the 5” Dell Streak yesterday, and I now know that I will not settle for anything less when my contract is up for renewal! It was an amazing experience. I’ll gladly lug around a slightly bigger phone as a trade off!!

Oh, I’d happily have one to place on the bedside cabinet, but I’ve had a few incidents of RAGE recently where my battery’s died at critical moments.

My phone has lost my trust and I’m taking it out on the poor DROID X :(

This bad boy has a TI OMAP 3630 w/ PowerVR SGX530… no wonder its so fast!! I’m liking the nice screen. Wish it was Super AMOLED, though.
