Android 2.1 update shown running on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

While the Android 2.1 update for the Xperia X-range of Android phones isn’t expected to officially arrive until much later in the year, some leaked shots of an early build have surfaced on the web – showing a work-in-progress version of the 2.1 release in action on the grand and luxurious X10.

It’s such an early build that Sony Ericsson’s custom user interface hasn’t yet been added to it, leaving the phone running the default Android 2.1 install – so don’t go getting excited about this appearing through official channels any time soon. There’s much branding work to be done yet.

It’s a little sad for poor old SE that the whole world will still be talking about Android 2.2 – and maybe even its successor Gingerbread – by the time 2.1 arrives on the Xperia range, but that’s the price you pay for using such a heavily-skinned version of the OS.

Question is, tho, other than the net geeks who are bothered about these finer details, who cares what version OS the X10 runs? I mean, give someone who just wants a decent phone, but doesn’t know any more than that, an X10 and a Desire to play with, I doubt whether such a person would know that one has a newer Android OS to the other. And such a person is representative of the large majority of the handset buying public.

Sure, for those of us who care, getting the latest OS in a device matters, but SE are clearly aiming at a market majority rather than winning favour with the geek minority

On the whole it’s a great phone as it is, but I want flash 10 so I can see BBC iPlayer, seesaw and tvcatchup, I hear only 2.2 will deliver these… unless anyone knows another way to view these? 2.1 will allow tethering via bluetooth so that’s something to look forward to.
