A momentous occasion indeed. Following a leak yesterday in which the official Android 2.1 update for the [US network] Sprint variant of the HTC Hero appeared for download via unofficial channels, a few brave souls have installed the ROM to see what happens.
And it works. It’s the full, official Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero. Here’s a video of the long-awaited Hero Android 2.1 being installed and eventually seen running, courtesy of the brave Droid Dog.
Obviously, when YOU get it for YOUR HTC Hero depends very much on where you live and who your network is. We’ve had it confirmed by Vodafone in the past that regional Android updates are compiled by the networks themselves, not Google, so if you’re running Android 1.5 on a Hero this is by no means confirmation that it’ll hit your phone any time soon.
But at least we now know it’s possible outside of “hacking” circles. Now, wouldn’t it be funny if Android 2.2 was announced next week?

BTW, it’s kinda funny the time was 4:20 when you updated. Just saying.
