The lack of a fully-featured Android client from Skype is an enormous hole that will soon be filled, with a Skype PR person revealing the company’s planning a global roll-out of an official Skype Android app later this year.
Better still, the app won’t just give you voice-chatting options – it’ll be fully video friendly as well. The poor old mobile networks are about to get HAMMERED once more. Here’s the quote from Skype:
“We will be bringing a direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers. (i.e. similar to how we offer the iPhone app today)”
A slightly feature-limited (no wi-fi support) official Skype app is already available on Android in the US – but it’s exclusive to phones running on the Verizon network (pictured above). Hopefully this new app will bring proper VOIP support to the masses, everywhere, and put an end to the odd mish-mash of competing, but not really working, third-party VOIP tools out there on Android.

/ May 28, 2010Sipdroid is working great for me, and other VOIP apps also did. But skype is probably nice if you don’t use SIP based VOIP or want to use your skype contacts etc.

/ August 29, 2010I use Nimbuzz to access skype from my Motorola Milestone, it can also show you your skype credit and works over wifi, you do need a free Nimbuzz Account. If you want to top up your skype credit you need to be on a desktop, although using the Opera mobile browser causes the website to think you are on a desktop and you can by more credit. It is not perfect, but may be useful until the official skype app arrives.
