REPORT: Android phones outsold iPhone in the US during Q1 2010, by 28% to 21%

American data compiler the NPD has reported that sales of Android-powered smartphones accounted for 28 percent of total new smartphone sales during the first quarter of 2010, with Apple’s iPhone only managing to capture a 21 percent market share.

But Android is not #1 yet – BlackBerry phones are still the market leading devices in North America, capturing 36 percent of the market during the first three months of 2010.

And here’s the most likely reason why Android eclipsed iPhone, Verizon and Motorola’s insanely popular DROID:
