WEEKLY WRAP: Elsewhere in Android news

Here’s our now-traditional weekly look back at the Android stories we didn’t feature this week, either due to factual concerns, because they were a bit too complex for us to fully grasp, or because we missed them – after all, we do occasionally have to stop doing this for things like toilet breaks, meals etc.

So here’s what we, and therefore possibly also you, didn’t learn about this week:

Android 2.2 coming to HTC Desire on June 23rd?
The worst story of the week. A man was told something by another man at a mobile phone call centre – and it was soon reported as CAST-IRON FACT around the world. If Android 2.2 hits the HTC Desire on June 23 2010, I will flush my HTC Magic down the toilet and put a video of it on YouTube. Promise.

OLPC tablet to have dual-mode screen, run Android, be at CES 2011
What a comprehensive headline. Save yourselves some facts to put in the actual story, guys!

Dell launches Streak tablet PC across Europe
Here’s that nice old man from the BBC the news always turns to when something happens on Twitter waving a Dell Streak around.

Symantec readies Norton security, storage apps for Android, iPhone smartphones
Great, ready for an attack of pre-installed rubbish for us to uninstall every time we buy a new phone?

Update: Google Android UI to Still Be OEM-Configurable
Another PC World classic, where “Everything will remain the same” is somehow reported as if that’s news.

I Hope This 14MP Cameraphone Really Runs Android
Altek released concept images of a new phone, then everyone assumed it might/would/could run Android – and suddenly the news became “New 14MP Android phone” – even though it IS NOTHING OF THE SORT. At least not yet. Calm down and read the original before you rewrite it in a hurry, people.

Android, Blackberry getting Eurosport app
It’s not out yet, we’ve checked this morning. It also launched on iPhone nearly a year ago, so we probably wouldn’t have done something proper on it anyway out of REVENGE.

A Novel Idea From Pandigital: an Android-Powered E-book Reader
Nice headline. Boring old product, though.

Orange widens Android smartphone portfolio
We got in trouble this week for suggesting the Orange Boston is launching in the UK – Orange then told us it isn’t. It hasn’t said what handset it’s launching in its place, though.

That’ll have to do. We stayed up late last night watching 99 Red Balloons on YouTube, so we’re a bit angry today. If we do any more we’ll just upset people – and we’ve been trying very hard not to make enemies on this particular bit of the internet. See you later, after a calming nap.
