Android 3.0 "Gingerbread" coming in Q4 2010, says WebM media team

Crikey, while we’re all expecting Google to unleash Android 2.2 on us all later today at its Google I/O 2010 conference, plans are already well underway for a launch of the 3.0 refresh of the mobile OS. Over on the FAQ page for the WebM media project which Google revealed yesterday, a date is given for the arrival of Android 3.0 – AKA “Gingerbread” – Q4 2010. Here’s the quote, lifted from the FAQ:

When will other Google products support WebM and VP8?

“WebM support in Android is expected in the Gingerbread release (currently planned for Q4, 2010). We expect many other Google products to adopt WebM and VP8 as they prioritize it with their other product requirements. Keep an eye on the WebM blog for announcements”

Obviously there’s obviously no official imagery yet available for Android 3.0, so we’ll leave this update as TEXT ONLY. Your browser is working properly. Link via Androidsis.

UPDATE: Obviously we’ve been a bit ‘previous’ in suggesting Gingerbread will be Android 3.0. It could be version 2.3 or 2.5, or Google might go crazy and label it 5.0 simply to annoy Apple.

Your phone is totally too old. Buy Htc Desire or incoming Desire HD…

@Stephen One of the main features of 3.0 will be that it is modular so that it shouldn’t matter as much going forward.

If they move all the core bits such as gmail, keyboard and maps to the marketplace then you can upgrade them yourself without waiting for the manufacturers in future

Why people are so negative .. I don’t get it you bought an android 1.5 phone .. if you’d bought a Nokia you’d have no upgrade .. why should you get one with hero .. get an upgrade .. the hero is yesterday .. HTC desire I’ve had four months .. previous to that a Samsung galaxy ..

@James, that’s because upgrading your Nokia or non-Smartphone doesn’t make a difference to anything but stability and performance. What annoys people is that they pay €300 for a phone and then the following week its out of date and the developers stop producing new software for it. Peopl only buy phones with Andoid OS for the software that they get from the marketplace.

stability and performance…ok, but imho what the people want is a functional system(sw/hw): Not a potential megapowerful hardware or megacustomizable software but a really usable cool system…1 version for 2 year at least, 1 click and go…like an iphone!

I just feel really sorry for the hero users. That phone was a benchmark for HTC and Android and now there treating the users like crap and keeping them in the dark. But anyway moving on, you people do know that there is a requirements list for the phones. To run gingerbread you need a 3.5 inch screen or above, a 1ghz processor and at least 512mb of RAM. There is probably more to add to this list, but I just don’t know about it. So basically just the newer device can get it sorry :) (iphone’s suck)

  10. iPhone pay monthly deal is a good choice for those users who want a regular communication in a reasonable price. This deal is really profitable and offers a great discount including free gifts.

  11. payg is suitable for those who want to save money on communication. This is not a contract deal. It gives you liberty to move at any network service providers.

  12. Yeah, it works out better value if you buy a pay as you go iphone and opt for a sim only contract. You can get a payg iphone for £500 with a £10 per month SIM only contract which only lasts 30 days so theres more freedom and flexibility compared a contract iphone.

  13. Excellent, I recently bought an Android HTC Desire HD and the Apps rocks
