REPORT: Global Q1 smartphone sales up 49% year-on-year – Android up 707% in the US

Yes, that is indeed supposed to say 707 percent. According to the latest smartphone market share analysis compiled by Gartner, Android has indeed had a meteoric year, multiplying its share of the smartphone market in North America by a staggering SEVEN TIMES over the last 12 months.

This explosive growth helped phones running the Android OS account for 9.6% of all worldwide smartphone sales in Q1 of 2010, up from only 1.6% during the same quarter of 2009.

Here’s a very nice quote from Gartner’s latest sales report:

“This quarter saw RIM, a pure smartphone player, make its debut in the top five mobile devices manufacturers, and saw Apple increase its market share by 1.2 percentage points. Android’s momentum continued into the first quarter of 2010, particularly in North America, where sales of Android-based phones increased 707 per cent year-on-year

And here’s the RAW DATA, showing global smartphone sales by OS during the first three months of 2010:

Unbelievable growth for Android there, but we don’t really need a nicely-formatted table to know that Google’s OS has had a stunning year. Link via PC World, and be sure to read the full report over at Gartner.

Android is now really taking off. However, I want the following apps on Android
    1. The Guardian (I actually sent an email to Jonathon Moore at the Guardian an email last night requesting this).
    2. Bloomberg
    3. Grandtheft Auto: Chinatown Wars (and the previous PSP GTA games as well)
    4. High quality EA games optomised for Android 2.1. Niot rubbish Java ME stuff like Tiger Woods 2009 on Android.
The Iphone is getting alot of very high quality stuff.
Another thing Mozilla get your act together with Fennec. A pre-alpha is not good enough at this stage.
