Speaking to investors at the Google HQ last Thursday, Google’s Eric Schmidt gave us some HARD NUMBERS about how fast Android adoption is racing away – it’s selling 65,000 Android-powered phones per DAY.
Obviously Eric’s not talking about Google-branded hardware here, the 65,000 number refers to sales of all Android-based hardware from all its hardware partners. Here’s a quote from Eric’s little speech:
“Our partners are shipping about 65,000 Android handsets per day but if you check the blogosphere you’ll discover there are some reports that that number might be quite low … We’re trying to build an entire ecosystem of openness, the inverse of the other guys”
Oh yeah, take that, the OTHER GUYS!
If you assume 30 days is an average month, that’s 1.95 million Android phones being sold around the world every month. Not bad. Seems like a lot, anyway.
In fact, the BBC reported back in April of 2009 that Apple sold 5.2m iPhones in a sales quarter after it had been on the market for a couple of years, which is about where Android is today, if you believe Eric’s data.
